The hike starts at an unmarked trailhead on NW Honeysuckle Drive on the north edge of Corvallis and starts out following an old unused access road through an area where a thickly planted Douglas Fir Forest was removed years ago to restore it to an open Oak savanna. Of course now the blackberry bushes are taking over the open area. The route soon leaves the road on an unofficial unmarked trail so narrow that it's difficult to avoid contact with the occasional poison oak branches lurking in the trail side grass. After crossing an open power line right-of-way the route follows a logging road for a short distance before again taking an unofficial shortcut trail kept open by local hikers and mountain bikers. This trail is even narrower and there is no avoiding contact with poison oak but it's my favorite part of the hike. Finally this shortcut leads to the official well groomed Dan's Trail for the remainder of the hike through the McDonald Research Forest to the top of Dimple Hill. |
