The lake parking lot was already full at 8:15 AM when we arrived but rather than park far away and take the shuttle, we had seen that the parking lot for the "Great Divide Trailhead" had open spots on our way up so we grabbed a spot there. To start we headed down the trail/cross country ski route and then took what was a probably a horse trail up to Lake Louise as we passed some stables just prior to the hotel. A little muddy but it wasn't too bad. On the way back we just walked along the road back to the car. Once at the lake we took the Plain of Six Glaciers trail past the teahouse all the way to its end. There were clouds but also some blue skies. Most importantly no smoke like last year when we couldn't see anything. On the way back, we took the trail to Lake Agnes and its teahouse. You get some great views of Lake Louise from this trail as being above the lake really makes the lake color come alive. Passed Mirror Lake on the way back before joining the lakeside trail again close to the hotel. A long 13 mile day for us but the scenery made it all worthwhile.

This was the hike we had been looking forward to since we made a our plans to visit Canada over a year ago. Unfortunately the smoke was just so bad that this hike will be remembered for smoke and crowds. It should be a lovely hike around Lake Louise and up into the glacial valley behind the lake with stunning views of the lake, surrounding mountains and glaciers. You can't control the weather or forest fires but it was disappointing nonetheless. Hiking in elevation and smoke wasn't the greatest either but we didn't come all the way to sit around the hotel and do nothing so hike it we did.
