We started hiking on the Elephant head bike trail #930. After roughly 1 mile we turned left and headed down the Chino Basin trail. After another 0.7 miles we saw the sign marking the old Elephant head mills ruins but we didn't see any ruins or adobe walls of any kind here. I remember seeing some adobe structures here years ago, but they are no longer here. Does anyone know what happened to those ruins? Were they moved? vandalized?
Anyway, we continued down the 4x4 road through a gate and down until we saw a road branching off to the left. At this point, we hiked a total of about 2.7 miles. We turned left and headed down the road for roughly 1,000 feet. The road seemed to end in the middle of nowhere. We kept moving forward heading to the saddle near Little Elephant head. Then we realized this was the wrong saddle and we were going too far away from Yoas mountain. Because it was already 3 pm, we decided to bushwhack less than 1/4 mile back to the old 4x4 road and return the way we came. Even though we didn't make it to Yoas mountain, it was a great day, we saw some amazing scenery with nice views of both Elephant Head and Little Elephant Head. We also saw some nice stars and even 2 satellites in the sky after dark. |
