The Moanalua Valley trail splits three ways about 3 miles from the trailhead. I wanted to take the last branch I hadn't yet hiked. The Kulana'ahane trail begins at the split and ends at an overlook along the Ko'olau Range ridgeline.
The trail follows and crosses a couple streams 20 plus times. Not a good place to hike during heavy rainfall. Rainfall today was fairly light. It rains every day here it seems. Once the trail leaves the stream bed it is a short steep climb up to the overlook of the windward side of Oahu.
Saw at least three people being airlifted off the Moanalua Ridge Trail as I was hiking. Too steep and slick for them, I guess. Only saw one hiker and her friendly and enthusiastic dog on the Kulana'ahane trail.
Found some guavas, but not nearly as many as other trails in the area.
Good day. :)

The Moanalua Valley trail splits three ways about 3 miles from the trailhead. I wanted to take one of the two branches I haven't yet hiked.
I keep hiking from here because it is only 10 minutes from where I'm staying. My time limit wouldn't allow me to hike all the way to the end, but at least I figured out which trail goes where. My hike yesterday went by a connector trail with an "End of the Road" sign. My hike today verified both ends.
I began hiking along the Moanalua Stream on the Moanalua Valley trail until the trail split at mile 3.8. I kept going straight, but that trail soon became very faint and overgrown, so I back tracked and took the right fork. After a short distance this trail left the valley and started ascending steeply through a forest of guava trees. A strong indication I was on the End of the Road trail.
Once I got on the first ridgeline with a view, I called it quits and returned. Good exploratory hike.
Stats include 3-mile granddaughter hike. :)

Kaho'omoe 'Ihikaputani is a peak in the Ko'olau Range on the island of Oahu. I began my journey at the Moanalua Valley TH. At 1.7 miles, I hiked up a connector trail to the Tripler Ridge trail. From there just follow the trail up to the peak at ~4.5 miles.
I bought some microspikes the day before so I could hike the muddy trails with some confidence. It rained the day before my hike and started raining hard not long after I got going. By mile 2 I was completely soaked.
The Tripler Ridge trail past the connector is overgrown, narrow, muddy and steep. Most every step, it seemed, must be planned and executed to prevent a fall. A fall in the last mile of trail could be fatal. Be careful and you'll be fine. There are ropes to help in the steepest muddy sections. Exciting and beautiful.
The summit was in the clouds so no views like two days prior. Ate quite a few guavas on the return. Yum. Challenging and rewarding hike. :)

From Moanalua Valley TH I hiked up to Puu Keahiakahoe and the WWII Naval radio station at the top of the Haiku Stairs (Stairway to Heaven) in Oahu's Ko'olau mountain range.
The first 3+ miles are pretty flat, then the climbing begins. The trail has mud throughout. I wouldn't do this hike in the rain without microspikes. I had good (dryish) conditions, and many parts of the trail were still a bit treacherous, especially descending.
Views on this hike are oustanding. Kaneohe and Honolulu are both visible from the top. Worth the tough climb and mud bath. If I do it again, I will bring microspikes. The steep slick muddy parts are nerve racking.
I hiked a few steps down the Haiku Stairs (illegal) to get some pics. Just after I departed a police chopper flew by patrolling for illegal hikers going up the stairs. $1000 fine.
Many guavas were consumed on the descent.
Fabulous hike. Not for the faint of heart. :)

First full day in Hawaii. Hiked some of the Tripler Ridge trail with my daughter and son in law in the morning. Did an urban hike with my 8 year old granddaughter in the afternoon. Then hiked part of the Moanalua Valley trail with two of my granddaughters in the evening. Fun day. :)

We began at the Moanalua Valley (MV) Trail with the trailhead at the MV Neighborhood Park. Parking was difficult and many of our group parked on the streets in the neighborhood. We had no problems with tickets are citations but were careful not to block any driveways.
We followed the MV Trail for about three miles as it meandered with the Moanalua Stream along the MV. There were several stream crossings on the trail and entering the water was unavoidable. We diverted to the ascent of the ridge line leading to Puu Keahiakahoe (PK) at three miles along MV Trail.
We hiked another 2 miles along the ridgeline. There were sections along the ridgeline that were extremely narrow and muddy at the same time. We used spikes (crampons) to deal with these muddy areas.
Reaching the top of PK along the ridge line is breathtaking. We joined the main ridge line and saw PK immediately. The notable feature being the abandoned relay station.
Around the relay station are the Haiku Stairs and many views of Kaneohe Bay and Valley.
