Our third hike of the day was on the Red Buckeye Loop. This is a short 2 mile loop that goes to the Brazos river at the junction with Big Creek. We started just before sunset and finished just after sunset. Really pleasant walk to the Brazos river which is the Eastern Border of the park. The forest here takes on a little bit eerie look at dusk and probably even more so as it gets darker, mainly due to the oak trees with the vines that seem to climb up anything that doesn't move. When I was here a year ago I couldn't get to the park due to flooding and you can see the high water marks on the trees throughout the park that in some places are ten feet up. The Brazos is a fairly deep channel maybe 40 or 50 feet deep and when it was flooded was up past the bank. Walking along this trail really gave me a different perspective as to just how much water comes down this river when it floods. All of these trails we were on today are fairly close to park roads or campgrounds but with the heavy growth you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. This was a very pleasant end of the day walk with a whopping 26 Feet of AEG and most of that was when we dropped into Big Creek.
