The road to the TH was a bit rough over the last mile, although a high clearance SUV with good tires could probably get within a half mile of the TH.
The hike started out easy enough -- we were on a jeep road for about a mile. We were heading east and the early morning sun was low, so I was looking down at my feet while on the road. After that the adventure began. We mostly followed a wash for about 1.75 miles up to a saddle. We got out of the wash a few times, but brush compelled us to get back in the wash.
Once at the saddle, it was pretty brushy for the last 1.5 miles to the summit. Actually, route finding was probably more difficult than the brush, because you find gaps or corridors to get around the worst of the brush. It was a steep climb, and you really couldn't see very far ahead with the trees and vegetation; so we were constantly looking at a GPS to make sure that we were on track. It was as much a mental grind as a physical one.
We made it to the summit and took a well deserved break. The views were good, but not really outstanding.
I located the benchmark and both reference marks; oddly, the arrows on the reference marks did not point to the benchmark. In fact, one of them pointed in the opposite direction.
The summit register log had entries going back to 1974. Mount Tipton is one of 9 Arizona peaks on the Sierra Club Desert Peak Section(DPS) peak list, and many of the logbook entries were from DPS members.
This is a challenging hike and you'll have to make a sacrifice to the hiking gods to bag this peak! |
