Early morning hike in the Wickiup system. Wanted to check out the Elmore Wash Trail with the hopes of doing a trail description. Parked at the Elmore Wash TH which is about 5 miles off the I-17 on FS 618. Parking is minimal, only parking for two cars at the TH.

Took the trail in west. This trail is fainter than the other trails in the system, but still easy to follow. Pretty straight trail with some minor twists as it negotiates the hills of the area. It never reaches the top of any of the hills, sticking primarily to the slopes. There were a several of minor wash crossings. I’m assuming that at least one of the crossings involved Elmore Wash. The views were limited because of the surrounding terrain. The best views are at the end when you approach Sunset Loop. Sun exposed trail, very little shade to be found, though there were 3-4 legitimate pine trees along the way. The trail is relatively flat. You lose and gain about 200 feet. The neatest thing about this trail is that it can act as a connector to the Beaver Creek Wilderness. Where I started the trail off of FS road 618 was also the same spot where a road took off that led to the TH of Walker Basin Trail.

When I finished Elmore Wash, I walked the road that led to Walker Basin Trail. It is about .8 miles to get to the TH. The first .4 miles are drivable by any type of vehicle, the last .4 miles would require high clearance. There were several parking spots along the way if you weren’t able to drive all the way in. (These parking spots could also be used for the Elmore Wash Trail, if the roadside parking was filled). Walked in on Walker for about .1 miles. Trail looks pretty faint. I’d be interested in checking it out, but would probably want to download the route.

Had the trails to myself. No wildlife. Noticed a side trail about .8 miles in on the Elmore Trail that I would be interested in checking out.
