Deb and I had never been here before, so this was stop 1 of 3 on the day.

There's not a lot to hike here, but the history from the short film and in the Museum was quite interesting. It's one big friggin hole.

We only got to walk out to the first area on the guided tour because of lightning within 15 miles.

Crater Video - [ youtube video ]

The largest found fragment from this meteor impact was found at our third stop for the day, Diablo Canyon Ruins. It was 500 lbs and 12 miles away from the crater

This is a really big hole. It was another must-do family reunion activity, on an afternoon that was pretty warm for most people. I wish the film had more detailed analysis of what was happening before and during the impact. The graphics were spectacular, but it would have been even better to slow it down more and add the scientific detail.

This probably isn't really worth logging since it's only a mile - however, I thought some of my photos were interesting enough. It's a private operation so they get away with charging $15 for admission. You don't even get to hike around the entire crater nor down to the bottom.

Interesting crater and museum/science center. For real, they even have petrified dinosaur poop for sale in the gift shop. :)

Nice view...took some Navajo kids and some of our church kids on this little trip. Too bad they don't allow hikes to go down into the crater...even if it were at least a few times a year (like Crack in Rock at Wupatki).
