Early morning hike in Prescott. This was not the hike I had planned, but I ended up doing this short loop in a somewhat frustrating search for the Sundog trail. I needed to be finished with my hike by 8am, so my plan was to to be hiking the Sundog by 5am. Unfortunately, the TH for Sundog is paid parking that didn’t open until 6am. Annoyed, but not defeated, I headed over to this “secondary” TH that was in the vicinity of the Peavine/Sundog TH. I had scoped out this TH in the past, but had never hiked from it. I felt it was close enough to the Sundog trail that there was a good chance that they connected.

Got to this TH around 5:15am. Technically, this TH doesn’t open until 6am. However, it was accessible and I didn’t need a paid parking slip so I went for it. Very dark out when I started, but I came with a headlamp, so I was good. First attempt to find the Sundog trail lead me in a circle. Literally. I ended up doing the Watson Woods Riparian Preserve loop. Didn’t see much, but I heard quite a bit of activity in the brush. Biggest fear was to come upon skunk. But luck was with me. All I saw during my outing was a coyote. This loop is very short, so I didn’t lose much time in making the circuit. In doing the loop, there was one track that took off to the northeast. This track lead to a dual track that went in a north-south direction. I ended up following this track in both directions and after an hour of searching discovered how this area ties into the Sundog trail. Basically, if you follow the dual north, you will go under the Prescott Lakes Pkwy. As you are going under this road there is a wooden fence to the east of the dual track. Literally, on the other side of this fence is the Sundog trail. ](*,) I went by this fence twice, before I realized there was a trail on the other side of the fence. By the time I realized how these trails connected it was too late for me to start and finish the Sundog in the time that I had. I chalked this up to learning the area went off to find a trail that I could do in the short time that I had.
