The Barefoot Trail opened about a month ago and I've wanted to visit since I read about it. It's gotten a decent amount of press, mostly due to it's uniqueness ... apparently it is the first of it's kind in the US.
"Grounding" is the practice of walking barefoot on natural surfaces, and it's supposed to help you connect with nature, and can help reduce stress and inflammation and improve sleep, according to some ... there's some woo-woo stuff about releasing negative ions into the ground - I don't know about all that, but I just liked the sound of it all.
The path is about a mile loop, with many different surfaces to walk on including dirt, sand, pine cones, mud, wood, cork, rubber, etc. There are also small obstacles and things like a slack line, zip line, and tight ropes.
I enjoyed it quite a bit - will probably visit again.
The only real negative is that it's right next to the highway, so it's not as peaceful as it would be if it were deeper in the woods. Speaking of which, it IS in the woods - be sure to follow the directions from their website, not from Google maps, which apparently takes you to the rest area on the highway.
They will close for the season at the end of September and re-open next Spring ... and will be expanding and adding more trails and obstacles, as well as hopefully opening more locations.
