| no partners | | Quick backpack to bag the adventurous 12,033' Whorl Mountain, a peak that has long been on my to-do list. South of the more famous Matterhorn Peak, Whorl is a massive granite knife-edge ridge that looks unclimbable from below but goes with lots of careful Class 2 and 3 routefinding and scrambling.
The SE face has three steep chutes that need to be ascended from left to right, crossing over into the next chute at specific elevations. The third chute ends at a massive chockstone rubble pile, climb under the chockstone and up the dark tunnel behind to attain the summit ridge, a jumble of boulders and pinnacles with huge dropoffs to the west side. Fortunately an amazing ledge and ramp system makes for an exposed but easy traverse over to the summit. Care is needed to reverse the route, including finding the top of the chockstone tunnel.
Whoever originally figured out this route was hardcore, without lots of Internet guidance I would have never made it. Great climb. |
