| no partners | | This was our last day in Tucson and I was looking for a short trail close to our rooms that would provide a good opportunity for sunrise. The last couple of days my wife had been shuttling me to TH’s which is awesome, but meant no early wake-ups and hence, no sunrise hikes. Got to the TH just after 6am. Still dark out, but it wasn’t long before the hint of daylight started to play along the eastern horizon. It was cloudy out so I was hoping for a colorful sunrise.
This was my first time to this TH and I was happy to see a number of trails to choose from. Since none of them are in HAZ (yet), I decided to go with this description’s choice of Enchanted Peak. This is one of about 8 trails in the system. It is one of the more distant trails from the TH (about 1.5 miles), but it is also one of the tallest (maybe 300 ft. el.), so I was hoping for a good seat for the morning show. I followed an assortment of trails-El Grupo, the Rift, Fire 7, El Tocote- to get to the Enchanted Peak Trail. The trail goes up the east side of the hill and there are some nice rock features on the way up. I enjoyed the hike up, but apparently it was too cloudy for the sun. It never really made an appearance. Views from the top were ok. There was a nice info board labeling the peaks to the east. I also appreciated being able to check out how the trails (official and unofficial) interacted. I love to “grid” trails, so I decided to work the north and part of the trails to the west. Most were just community access trails or routes created by bikers. There were some interesting old foundations that indicated that there use to be another purpose for the area. Perhaps picnic sites? Also, there was a large man-made berm incorporated into the park. Residual from the neighborhood construction?
Fun working the area. Very convenient. Definitely, a place I’ll come back to and explore some more. Had the trails to myself with the exception of a couple of rabbits. |
