With knee surgery looming in the upcoming week, my Christmas break was a little low key. Kaite and I climbed a lot, but we were relegated to crags, as the kneee can't handle much of an approach or hike at this point. Nevertheless, we were able to get in a productive day at Atlantis and tried out a few new routes that were put up at a sub area of Atlantis called the Funny Farm. The highlights of the day were the two moderated multipitch routes we got on, including an excellent 200 foot 5.7 two pitch trad line that I strung out as on pitch. The rope drag was not that bad, but the route ate up pro and I found myself a little short on the pieces I needed near the top. After the Funny Farm, we headed to the southside of Atlantis to knock out a 5.7+ trad lead I had not led yet and to send Sir Charles cleanly the route I hung on a few weeks back.

Im still hobbling around on a bum knee, but we were still able to get a little climbing in. I just led four rather easy routes, but did send a moderate 5.10 for my second to last climb. Katie is getting a lot better with each climb and proving to be a trustworthy and attentive belayer. There is a ton of water down there and some lingering fall colors, making for a pretty scenic crag right now.

Bring a BD .4 and .5 for the run out section with missing pitons on pitch two. Led all three pitches.
I spent a couple Sunday mornings over the last two weeks climbing here. This is a perfect area for early morning summer climbing. Sunday was downright gorgeous. We arrived after a light rain and along with the morning shade, got some nice cloud cover. The Trident is a real fun multipitch, almost has the feel of a Sedona sand tower with its big views and exposure. There are also some high quality moderates with Hide and Seek and Alley Cat being the highlights. My friend could not finish his lead on Giggling Marlin, so I finished off the stout 5.9 for him. I think this route would be a 5.10a at other crags. Cool area overall. I really like how I am exploring and climbing in areas that I have driven by for years now. A fun new chapter in my outdoor Arizona career.

Short day, definitely not enough climbing for most of us, but we were all kinda tired. There was actual water down in Atlantis this time, which I think sort of contributed to the feeling that we wanted to leave, instead of getting the rope or our feet wet. (Please note earlier Supes triplog, confirming that Arizona climbers melt in water.)

James is still working on his lead head and doing better than he thinks he is. Neither one of us climbed in the past two weeks, so not feeling particularly confident. James put up both routes, Chris then climbed them, and I cleaned up on TR. No leading for me today, but I'm starting a new workout regimen... I know it's not always in the strength of the climber, but in the positioning (oh, to be a ballerina on the rock), and definitely in the psychology. I'm good at figuring out positioning, but this isn't enough to boost my confidence. But knowing that if I throw for a hold, I will stick it -- this helps immensely in my lead practice. Just a matter of time...

Went with James & the gang, plus one Amy and Mark (and several dogs). It was WINDY. The point today was to get more comfortable leading, which the wind was not helping. The belay ledge beneath Mondo Freako & G-String can comfortably fit two to three climbers. We had four climbers and two dogs up there at one point, one of which was tied up and trying to walk everywhere, and the other which was attempting to take a nap on the rope. I think I died a little inside.

I got up to lead Mondo Freako, which I really hated this time around. I think it was due to all the activity going on at the base of the climb, and I was super uncomfortable. I think I ended up sitting on the rope twice due to overgripping. The climb itself is pretty straightforward, and probably a lot of fun actually.

Next, I wanted to continue leading G-String, so I waited until some of the people and one of the dogs had moved on. I asked everyone at the base to not make any noises, and then easily led the climb. I really liked this one this time around. It really helped to focus on the rock as well.

The wind was really whipping up at this point, and we were all very cold, but there was one long rope still attached to Giggling Marlin. I really wanted to try this one out again since it didn't get a fair try last time due to nerves. It was super fun!! Just did it on TR, but I imagined if I was on lead what I might be doing. Pretty sure I could do it, so now my goal is to be able to lead it by the end of the season. Just need to strengthen my head game.. the moves are all already there. :)

We finished up by meeting at AZ Wilderness and admiring all the really famous people on the wall in the hallway! Excellent food and drinks there, as always! And all three pooches enjoyed the patio. :)

"Take I am gassed " was the call from 80 feet above me. I knew I was in trouble if the fittest person I know had worn herself down on this 5.8 warm up. And when it came my turn to climb (and clean) I made it a whopping 30 feet to get stuck at a small roof where I had bailed last time I was here. Then I followed it up with being pumped to the point of not being able to climb Freako which I had just climbed and led last weekend. Embarrassing but true.

I redeemed my self by effortlessly slicing through a chicken fried steak at los hermanos.

And Kelly? After a short rest she finished the climb in style, then climbed it and cleaned and finally led freako to cap the day and get to the enchiladas!

this past winter, john and i decided that we would try to climb locally on his every other friday off instead of going to the rock gym
we've been out eight or nine times doing this, in addition to several sunday outings
we've hit sven slab, the monk, lookout mountain, papago park, cactus flower east, and most recently extended our range to queen creek (upper devil's) as it has warmed up in the valley
probably getting too warm to do this much longer
today we went to atlantis
had the good fortune to share the area with two climbers who offered us their rope on bunny slope
a challenging toprope for me, and i got to do it twice
not ready to lead this one
went over to a short wall and led mondo freako, then climbed it again on toprope
haven't been going to the rock gym very often lately, but today illustrated the value of getting even an indoor climbing workout regularly - i could tell
late lunch at los hermanos :)
not a bad set of outings so far this year, john - it's been a lot of fun

beautiful day for climbing at queen creek. Spent the whole day with a couple of fresh from the gym climbers setting ropes and climbing. Even though we got an early start it w rather crowed so didnt get to try any of the more difficult moderates but I will certainly be back to work on them.

shared ge first run up G string with a centipede who didn't understand why I was so slow when he could just sip along. Very colorful critter that fortunately had other places to go.

Atlantis is known for being the place to go where it is cool so I was concerned that we wold freeze in the shade and have to cross the flowing waters/ wrong on both and had a very nice day climbing.

Headed down to Atlantis with Joey for some climbing. The plan was to finally get me leading. I was excited and nervous but figured there would be nothing to it if I could just top rope my climbs first. Instead, he suggested that I just go for it on Mondo Freako. So I chalked up.. chalked up again.. and again... ok maybe that's enough chalk. Or not. Got my rope ready and immediately back-clipped. *sigh* Fixed it without too much difficulty, and then continued up. It took a while. A lot longer than any 5.7 should. But I got up it and was victorious!

The rest of the day was spent working my nerves out and climbing and cleaning the other routes. After Giggling Marlin, decided it was time to just sit back and belay or watch the other climbers. We finished up our short day and then headed to Dos Hermanos for some delicious Mexican food. Mmmmm. :)

Rock climbing on Christmas? Who would have thought?

Since the family was out of town, I decided to hook up with my inaugral rock climbing partner - Hikergirl81 and hit Atlantis out in Superior, AZ! We had a great time. COLD, but great!

We arrived around 10am and met up with two other climbers who arrived in Arizona this morning during a nationwide road trip from New York. Both were novice climbers, but we're eager to climb.

Because of the cold, I was only able to lead two routes before my fingers went numb! Giggling Marlin and Neptune. Once the anchors were set, the New Yorkers top roped them. Hikergirl kicked butt and also lead Giggling Marlin - Nice Job - very smooth! ;)

While we were there, I made four discoveries!

1.) Santa's sled from 1970 had crached in the rocks below. See pictures. Upon closer inspection, a Coors beer can was found wedged in the rails. Shame on you Santa!

2.) Someone left their finger tape. Finders keepers....

3.) a 1970 RC Cola soda can with a Jack Youngblood LA RAMS picture on it - SCORE!!!!

4.) A vampire spear head!

Thank you James for a great Xmas climb. We both didn't have the traditional family plans so we went climbing. I love how the rock is in Atlantis; smooth with awesome sometimes hidden handholds, especially Neptune (5.10a)! The only downfall was it's hard to hold on with numb fingers. :( As James said- "Should have gone hiking instead"

Well Chris, Randy, Julie and I ventured out to Atlantis again this morning and gambled on a day with no rain. Fortunately we got lucky - at first. Then not so lucky.....

According to reports, Superior got sprinkles throughout the night but was clearing by morning. I even called Circle K and asked the clerk how the weather was! She said it was partly cloudy but looked promising.

When we got there, it was cold and cloudy, but no rain.

We quickly unpacked and I started leading the first route. Not sure the name, but it was to the right of the main entrance to the other routes.

By the time we finished that route, the winds came and the dark grey clouds moved in.

We both chickened out on leading KGB with the possibility of rain so we led Giggling Marlin and switched anchors on top of KGB.

By the time I hit the KGB crux, the rain was coming down! The rocks felt as slick as glass. It was time to call it a day. Thank God I pulled out my trusty river rafting dry bag from the attic and turned it into my new climbing bag!

I took few pictures of climbing and more of the area. As you can see in the pics, there are several abandoned old cars that apparently crashed here decades ago. Some remnants of the mining boom from years past.

Next weekend it's Red Rocks Nevada!

Well this was my first outdoor rock climbing experience and I must say I wouldn't have had nearly as much fun if it wasn't for Chris, Randy and Julie. Thanks guys for making this happen for me!

We arrived at 7:30am and froze our butts off! I think the tempature was about 60 degrees but with the 20 MPH winds, it was MUCH colder. As the day went on, the winds finally subsided and the sun came out - warming up to the mid 70s.

This was the order of routes for the day. All cleaned! :)

1.) Giggling Marlin 5.9
2.) Neptune 5.10a
3.) KGB 5.10b
4.) Diaper Rash 5.10a

After a full day of climbing we were beat. On the way home we found an abandoned recliner on the side of the road - it SCREAMED photo shoot!

Overall, I had a great first time experience and wished another friend of mine was with me - you know who you are! BTW Chris, thanks for letting me lead belay today. I needed the practice.

A great trip but the camping area is a little less alluring than Cochise. Great climbing, my favorite type of climbs so far, I can really use my "scramblers technique" (palming, flake, stemming, balance etc.)
Again really enjoying climbing with a group! Groups are great for campfires too, the more the merrier!
Routes I really enjoyed:
Giggling Marlin 5.9
Grumpy after 8 5.10a
KGB 5.10b
Neptune 5.10a

approach: scree, mess of gravel on a very steep trail, MUST wear some type of closed shoe, or you can just rappel from the top near Neptune.
