Phil and I set out to climb where ever we could find shade, as it was supposed to be 15 degrees above average on this late March day. It was hot, busy, and not many options left by the time we arrived. We were able to climb one route a couple times before the sun took over. We scrambled around looking for more, but came up empty. I guess we will return to the area on a cooler day.

last minute invite from mike and fletch to climb at queen creek canyon
ended up at the mine area
warmed up on ride the wild, in lower looner
hiked up to magma gardens and did four climbs there
nice to hit a new area :)
mike led everything, i did everything on toprope, fletch did one climb then rested a couple of aches and pains
only my third time outside this year, and it always takes me a climb to get the feel of rock
got everything clean but roto evaporator, taking a short hang - doable next time
a little windy and cool at first, but warmed up nicely when out of the wind and in the sun
fun day as always with those two

got a mid-morning invite from mike and fletch to climb at queen creek
have been to the mine area twice, mostly wandering around with johnr1 looking for something we could climb
started with ride the wild for a warm up
mike led, fletch and i followed on toprope
moved over one fin for two climbs that are rated 5.9 in marty's book
no one felt like leading, so mike set up a toprope on mary jane
i made it up with a couple of hangs
fletch was the only one of us who got this one cleanly
moved the rope over to grasping for straws
did great on the bottom section, but the top gave me fits
cannot say i climbed this under my own power; had a little help from my belayer
all of us struggled on this one
mountain project has these rated at 10b and 10c
thin face is not my strong suit
had fun trying the harder climbs and it was an absolutely beautiful day out there
packed up and headed home for pizza and super bowl
really need to climb on rock more often

Started in Looner Land. Warmed up on a couple easy routes then got rained out. :( Magma Gardens will have to wait until next time.

"Car" camped the night before in the Subi with Jeff at Old Oak Flat, then the idea was to meet people around 10am for climbing in the Mine Area. We got there a little early, so cooked breakfast in the back of the Subi and waited while listening to music through the speakers of the car. We started to get a bit antsy when an hour went by and no one was showing up.. and then the music started to sound funny.. I ran up front to turn the key quick, but alas it was too late. Dead battery. We had a rope but no draws, and a phone but no service, and were miles away from the highway, where my phone could get service again. So, we waited.... And then decided that since no one was going to show up any time soon, it was probably safe to crack open the cheap cherry vodka we had. Unfortunately the only mixers were some OJ and some Monsters. Created a new drink, "Monsters Inc." Don't ever drink that, no matter how hard up! :sk: By the time our friends arrived three hours later, we didn't feel like climbing anymore, so just went into town for more vodka.. yeah, it was just one of those days. We sent a text to JB to bring cables (go figure, Kevin didn't have any, and I forgot mine at home after the last car cleaning), thinking he'd be there within an hour or two. Got back to the Mine and watched Kevin and Ayana climb.. eventually it started to get dark so we headed into town, only to find that JB hadn't left yet. Grabbed some cables at the Dollar General and some food at Dos Hermanos and then went back and jumped the Soobz. At that point it was getting pretty late, so we decided to stick around and set up camp back at Old Oak Flat. Finished the night off with some good people and some new arrivals. Not such a bad way to end such a weird day. =P

Ride The Wild Lead 5.9Sport1 Pitch50 ft
wandered around lower looner for a bit
found a very easy unknown route that both john and i led
couldn't have been more than a 5.4, but needed to get back on lead
found a doable looking arete climb, which john figured out was ride the wild
he didn't tell me and i didn't ask the rating
a fun and challenging lead, with the crux between the 3rd and 4th bolt
i took a couple of times and almost gave up on the difficult move, but tried it once more and got my hand on a good hold, finishing the climb with one more short breather
quite thrilling to accomplish and made my day :y:
john successfully top-roped this one
finished the day with a trip to los hermanos

cool arete with nice juggy holds for first two bolts then a bit of a roff to pull over.
First time at lower and it was a route finding adventure even with a Marty map. We led a short edgy flaky thing what was pretty new based on the amount of rock that the belayer had to dodge.

Kelly put on an amazing show on the aerete leading a hard 9. She gave the roof about four tries bfore it sucumbd to her will. :y:

Unfortunently I never bothered to look at the guide to see what problems I actually did today.
We left Phoenix just before 7:30 and were the first people to get to the climbing. Started off with a slabby 5.6. I'm not great with slab problems so it was good practice.
Second problem was a slabby 5.7 that one of the guys did mixed trad.
Then we decided to move over to Upper Looner Land.

Went out to meet some friends who were climbing. Was still fighting an illness I'd had since end of January, so supplied some delicious cheese and crackers for everyone at the crag. No climbing, but it was good to get out of the house and into the sun!

Crux is definitely near the start. Thin holds. A single mono pocket saved the day -- Use it! Continued on up. The higher you get, the easier it gets.
Fun day of climbing with friends Todd, Sarah and my 8 year old son. A little bouldering practice with my boy. Watched Sarah climb Grasping for Straws. I climbed Moon Floss. Todd made it up Straws. I gave it a try too, but unsuccessful. Started getting hot and called it a day.

Pro: varied- mostly small, med.
A day off work meant an extra day to play!
We headed out for a full day in Lower Looner Land with a borrowed a copy (out of print)of Marty K.'s guide book for the area. http://www.amazon.com/Jocks-Guide-Canyo ... ikearizona

Very tough to manage picture taking when it's just 2 people.....all hands are busy!

We moved around between
Snorkeling the Rhyolite 5.5
Strawberry Razzle Tea 5.8
Off like a Prom Dress 5.6
and finished in the dark with some sort of variation between
Shiver Me Timbers 5.3 over to Ride the Wild 5.9 and down.
Here's a good look at Ride the Wild
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmc6bedNLLw
It would have been really dark on the walk out except we had the light of the mine to guide us.

All ligaments intact :D
Sadly, this area is likely to be subject to Copper Mine consumption in the future.
