Been a few years, and my memories are mostly of my climbing partner, Jeannie. She agreed to lead me up... if I would carry all the rope and gear! Seemed like a good enough deal. We drove over early and found the campground and trail... easy enough hike to the first pitch, then Jeannie scooted up the face and spent a lot of time checking out an existing bolt anchor in the wall. Finally, she moved on up and I followed. By the time we had made it above that area I knew we had a bit of a problem. Climbing up was okay, but I knew I would not be able to climb back down. I finally mentioned that to Jeannie, and her reply was an upbeat: "no problem... we're not climbing down that, we're going to rappel". Okay... whatever that meant?

From there on to the top was just fun, save for an overly dramatic moment wherein some bug got caught in her hair and she totally freaked out. Turns out she can't handle flying insects!? Oh, well.

We moved through a slanted face that seemed easy yet she commented that a friend of her's had lost his girlfriend there... slipped and rolled down the rock. So... I guess it could have been more dangerous than it looked.

On the peak enjoying the great views, then working our way around and down, when all of a sudden there was an oddly dark cloud moving around the mountain towards us... I realized what it was, and immediately grabbed Jeannie and threw her to the ground and pinned her down. As this monster swarm of bees passed immediately over and around us, all I could think about was that I needed her at least until she'd gotten me down that lower section!

Bees gone... we worked down to the pitch, and it was interesting. She dropped on down from a ledge to take pics of me coming down, and as I waited on the ledge I began to study the little anchor that I was about to rely on for the rappel, and I began in that moment to appreciate her earlier focus and consideration of this same bolt.

Great day... hoping to get back up there this coming year.
