First spot of the day. Really enjoyed the brief section of crack on Betty Cracker.

 You Don't Know Jack... 5.9
I rode up with Tojo & Shawnye to Jack's for a weekend of climbing and bluegrass. Beans joined us as well. We all got out of town sort of late, so didn't have time to climb on Saturday before it got dark. We set up camp before the sun set. Tojo decided to walk his stuff down into the canyon before nightfall, so Shawnye took a nap and I read a book for a little while. Then we made dinner and wandered over to where Amos's group was playing bluegrass and some other popular tunes.

In the morning we all went down to the canyon. Janelle and I went to Cracker Jack and set up a climb there. We weren't really feeling it though, and after a while caught up with the other two to cheer them on over at the Main Wall. Tojo sent his project while we watched, and Shawnye came really close but had already expended too much energy earlier in the day. Turned out to just be a pretty easy weekend away from the city, which was really all I needed.

 Betty Cracker Toprope 5.9
You Don't Know Jack... Toprope 5.9
Camped Saturday night and then got into the canyon late (it was FREEZING at night, so we waited until things warmed up). Everything is fairly well flooded, but it's still possible to climb at most of the crags. We tried Swiss Wall first, but it was too cold (this was after traversing the creek and falling in the mud a lot and getting scraped up). I'm still not reacting well to heat or the sun, so we went to Cracker Jack instead. It's mostly in the sun, but a huge boulder and a tree do provide some shade.

I tried TR'ing Betty Cracker, but the left layback resulted in a weird right wrist twinge that led to numbness, same as what happened the last time I was at Northern Devils. Not cool. I climbed the rest of the route on face holds, then taped up before attempting You Don't Know Jack. This felt much better, and was much more fun. At the top of the route (essentially in an undercling above the anchors) there's a really cool half ammonite sticking out of the limestone. Next time I'll bring a camera.

Stayed out of the sun for the rest of the day and kept hydrated. There was some great work being done over at Six Shooter (5.12a) so James TR'ed a large section of it. This was much-needed for him, since he's been focusing on all these easy climbs recently. Having some other guys there who can climb harder and really challenge him helps a great deal.

It was really awesome to come hang out w/ our crazy group this weekend! I haven't gotten to climb with Jbeans in waaaay too long. I couldn't lead today, so she will get to lead belay me (for the first time!) at some point in the near future.

went up to jacks canyon with fletch and mike for the day
haven't climbed outside in months :o
that's just wrong
started on swiss wall, trying to stay in the shade
did three routes i've done before and made it up swiss miss with a take and a slip
wandered over to casino cliffs, where we did two short routes that fritzki told me about:
edge your bets - 10a
slots o fun - 10a
backtracked to cracker jack for a few more fun ones:
betty cracker - 9
you don't know jack :pk: - 9
snap, crackle or pop - 9
mike led everything, fletch led almost everything, and i did all routes on toprope
by about the fourth route, started to get the feel of rock again
weather held out, just a few bugs, good temps in the shade, only two other parties out there
saw evidence of the jack fire
thought about johnr1 a lot, as this was one of our favorite crags
got to climb some harder stuff and six out of nine new routes
had a great time :y:

both were new to me and i was able to lead them
didn't get the longer route cleanly, so top-roped this one again to see if i could get a better start and not use the arete as much but follow the bolt line

Went to Jacks with the Phoenix Rock Climbing Meetup. The weather has bee keeping folks away but this is the second time this month I have been to Jacks and it was plesant both times if you manage your day to stay on the shaded walls. We also climbed Casino and High Life.

I was surprised to find that climbing granite cracks at the overlook last week seemed easier than the familiar limestone of Jacks. May just hae been the routes worked that way but I expected to be climbing higher at Jacks. Maybe its just old age creeping in.

Too cold in the shade for us Phoenicians, but Cracker Jack was sunny and perfect! Finished off my day on Jack Off and Jack Pot. Joey showed me (again) how to clean a route on Jack Pot. Still scares me; just need to find a routine with it so I can get comfortable.. can't rely on others forever! =P Heights are such a headgame for me, and having heard all sorts of scary stories of people falling/dying while cleaning has me overthinking it.. sheesh!

I had a harder time with this one than with Jack and Jill Go Bolting. Could not get past that ledge.
Jack And Jill Go Bolting 5.10a
Ok, I kind of hang dogged some of this. But hey, I am 58 years old and just started climbing. My first 5.10. Well, sort of! Gimme a break, ok?
This was a climb day with two instructors from Vertical Relief, Chris and Jeff. Very fun day. My first time on "real" rock in many years, since I just started climbing again this winter via taking an NAU class at Vertical Relief. I am actually getting better at it than I was when I was in my 40's. Not to say I will ever be great at it, but it is fun, and I am getting stronger.

Nice day of climbing at Jacks Canyon yesterday - our friends Eric and Jen brought their quick draws and gave us a nice lead lesson. Good stuff! Need to come back and check out the other areas. After a couple of previous failures, I finally got my first lead route in (Jack Pot), which they told me was a good first one. Still need to learn anchors and trad lead is still new territory, but this was a good start. Eric and Jen said these are great first leads, since they're single pitch climbs with largely jug holds, and I'd agree with that.

Later on, Eric led the 5.9s, and Tanya and I just followed on TR. Tanya did great for her second-ever outdoor climbing session as she topped out on both Jack Off and Jack Pot. Very pretty place to climb in, too, though was pretty windy and chilly!
