haven't been here since last july :o
as usual, started the day on high life wall, and enjoyed shade for two of the first three routes
took a couple climbs to get the feel of leading here again
the canyon is more open since the fire, with more defined trails between areas
some of the undergrowth is coming back
only a few parties climbing today

jack's canyon is open again after the fire up there
as this is one of our favorite places to climb, john and i were hoping there wasn't too much damage
the fire swept through the entire canyon, following every turn
lots of overgrowth was burned, along with many of the trees
you could see where it burned pretty hot below the main wall
the routes were seemingly untouched and the canyon is now a lot more open
grass is already sprouting on the level areas
we like to do our warm up climbs on high life wall, so hit the three moderates first
both of us led all three routes, and i top-roped walk in the park again for extra credit

led walk in the park this time. Like many Jacks routes it has a trick start with several tempting holds and a neat ledge. I spent forever and a lot of Kelly's patience playing with the start and finally it just came and I flew up the wall. :D Such a nice feeling to get the sequence right it felt like a stroll rather than a climb. Now I just need to figure out what I did so I can do it again.

Perfect weather and the canyon is in great shape in spite of the fire. Fortunately the fire god must be a climber as none of the climbing walls seemed to have been touched. Someone has come through already and cleaned up the hiking trails between the walls so it is pretty easy to get around.

see Kelly's triplogs for more details

wonderful day climbing with Kelly. I was supposed to be auto racing in Wilcox but a couple things derailed that effort, So this was a great plan B. Weather was perfect with 70s and light breeze. Very few people for a holiday weekend and all we heard for quite a while was the birds chirping in the canyon. Later things picked up but we could pretty much climb what we wanted without waiting.

Started the day on high life which has morning shade, then cracker jack and finished on swiss wall.

I felt comfortable leading everythng exceptFeta (5.9) on swiss wall. Top roped it after kelly led it and really enjoyed it - but not enough to try leading it.

Big thrill leading 5.8s jack off and jack pot on cracker jack. Jack off is a long climb mostly along an aerete with a interesting boulder start and reachy thrid bolt. But once on the aerete it is a cruise.

Total for the day was 6 routes with 5 leads.

We finished up in time to slot into the Long Valley cafe behind the bikers and before the church ladies! :D Ecellent day climbing and thatnks to kelly for all the encouragment and solid belays plus inspiring lead on Gouda.

started the day at high life wall, warming up on the right hand 5.7
felt terrible on the first one, like i've never led before
second climb was easier and after that was ready to tackle the 5.8
top roped that one as well
john successfully led all three climbs and did quite well the entire day

met john at PRG for the drive up to jacks canyon
john successfully negotiated the muddy access road
someone in a ford focus was less fortunate
it would be torture to have your climbing day derailed before it started
hit sinker first for a warm climb, then lead these three on high life wall
both of us are getting more comfortable leading on real rock
one old and two new climbs in this section
the 5.8 was a challenge
all of it was a blast!

We were overdue for another trip outside and the holiday presented the opportunity so we headed off to Jacks Canyon for the day. I was concerned about Jacks in summer due to the heat and the access road. With monsoon rain, the access road becomes a mud bog and we arrived on a day when there must have been a huge storm the night before. Sure enough there was a giant mud bog but after a bit of foot recon, we discovered that the off road route was nice and firm so we went around. 8 hours later most of the road had dried out and it was easy going again. The weather was just about perfect and you can manage your climbing to stay in the shade most of the day. The afternoon brought cloud cover, a bit of a breeze and just enough scattered light rain to keep it cool.

We wanted to finish on casino wall so that we could sprint up the hill to the truck if it started raining heavy. We had the canyon almost to ourselves but when we arrived at Casino there was a mob of about 20 people. They high school students from Ohio who were on a month long adventure tour. The had four guides from Flagstaff who were teaching them TR climbing and rapelling. Most of them were handling the climbs very well and we found that the previous day they had been up Mt Humphries. Nice to see our youth doing something other than video games.

The guides were kind enough to pull down the routes we wanted and even offered some beta plus a stick clip without the stick.

We had a great day climbing and it was impressive to see Kelly get her lead head so quickly. She was smooth and confident with the moderate routes we choose. We both lead all the routes except for my top roping to clean one of the routes.

The drive home through the wet forest was plesant and featured a huge rainbrow. Hopefully a few more of these monsoon days and the forest will reopen.
