had declared no playdates sunday so i could watch olympic track & field
when i found out mike and fletch were going to the pit, invited myself along
got up there around 9:00 and found there has been a new parking area established for the pit and sandy's canyon
just a quarter mile west of the old one and clearly signed
you can still park near the campground in the lot nearest the road, but limited spaces
only a 3/4 mile approach
i've never seen so many people climbing there; perhaps perfect weather had something to do with that?
grabbed popeye (5.9) for a warm up climb
next up was mr. slate (5.10b), which i got cleanly for the first time - very happy about that
this climb has given fletch fits, and she got it on a second try at the roof
next, mike & fletch wanted to try true value (5.11a), which features a difficult roof pull
all of us struggled on the roof, with fletch having the best technique
i made it up, but it was ugly
moved over to sporte (5.10c) on the white wall
this one has a smaller roof, which i did not get cleanly, having to take
better style on finishing this one
good technique, and it's doable next time
two new routes with some harder stuff
warm in the sun, but had a little shade in the afternoon
just a great day to be up there :)

second visit to the pit
this time with mike and fletch
mike led all routes, fletch led the first one, and i did all routes on toprope
started with these:
popeye meets the burrito master, 5.9 55', mall wall
mr. slate, 5.10b 70', swiss tower
pleasant dreams, 5.9 70', son tower
bluto tastes an olive, 5.9 60', mall wall
finished with the two listed above
popeye is a little pumpy for a warm up
came off on my first attempt on mr. slate's roof and had to start over
got it on the second try, with a rest below the crux, so not clean
had done both of those routes on my first visit here with johnr1
the next four were new to me
had the most trouble on bluto, pulling a bulge at the top
fred and barney were a lot of fun, overhung with huge pockets and some stemming
took once on barney and got fred
fun to do some harder stuff, new stuff, and get three of the routes clean
always a good day out with mike and fletch

I had driven a good portion of the night and ended up at Recapture Reservoir in Utah, eventually finding a great little spot to car camp. In the morning, I packed up and started driving around, finding big blockades in front of the boat ramps. I drove around them and took a look at the water. There was a duck, standing in the middle of the reservoir. I couldn't believe my eyes. I sadly looked at my kayak and decided that this was it.

Soon I was on the road to Flagstaff, where I knew my friends were climbing. A few hours later I was joining them at Sun Tower. The excitement of the week had caught up with me, however, and I couldn't convince myself to put on the harness I'd carried out. We hung out for a while and then went back to town for sangria and dancing.

The next day it was back out to the Pit. I climbed Mr Slate, which again shut me down. One of these days I'll get it.. on TR. :P It was a good day of climbing and hanging out. Eventually it was time to throw in the towel and make the drive back to Phoenix.

Great way to end a fun, outdoorsy vacation with friends and family.

fun roof pull
first time climbing at "the pit"
tagged along with john's meetup group
wasn't sure what to expect, so it was nice to have the routes set for us
everything today was on toprope, but there are a few things we could lead next time
started with sunshine daydream, 5.7 75 ft
moved to blackboard (i think) 5.8-5.9 25 ft did this one twice
next the classic popeye meets the burrito master, first pitch only, 5.9 55 ft (twice)
finished with another classic, mr. slate 5.10 70 ft
cool place - limestone with pockets and jugs - fun climbing
saw a little rattlesnake spending the day curled up in the rocks
weather was wonderful with maybe a high of 75-80, cool breezes, clouds building then moving on
storms threatened but we didn't see any rain except for a few miles on the drive up
missed the big storm in the valley
burger and fries at bun huggers, then john sprang for pie on the way home
fun to see john climbing well
good times!

Met up with Katrina and Thaddeus at the Pit. I finally got on Mr Slate.. will need to go back again. I like the sort of "bouldery" style it has at the overhang. Definitely see why it's a classic. Good day of climbing for everyone.

We weren't at Swiss Tower, but I'm not sure where we really were.. didn't spend much time there. I had been sick for a little while and it was a real effort just to hike in. Robby Rob put up a 5.6 in the upper section of the wall. Just a short, three-bolt deal. I hopped on it and had to rest three times on the way up. We decided to go in to Flag instead and have some food and whiskey-chai (sure to cure any illness!)

We camped up near the Peaks and then thought we might go hike a little on Humphreys, and maybe even try to find the bomber crash site. No go; it was too tiring, so we turned around after not too long and went back to Phoenix.

••• Mr. Slate Toprope 5.10cSportG
Lead then chickened out at the crux.. waited for Mike to finish the lead, then climbed it clean on TR. Ugh!:(
••••• Abyss Toprope 5.11b
Amazing collection of V0 to V1 boulder problems on a sport climb!
Mike had to go back to work again; he works summers for the forest service as a firefighter. Monday I climbed with his roommate Patty. She showed the area but may have started me on the wrong foot with the leading head game. I started by leading the wrong warm up and remember thinking "this should be easier." Someone let us know, and suggested I back off the climb. I decided to find the courage to finish the buldgy slab. Then I led the correct warm up, it wasn't as smooth as I had hoped. There were way too many choices for holds, and sometimes I struggle with that.

Then, we could see and(over)analyze the crux moves of Mr. Slate. From this vantage point, we could see the move to take us through the crux and the "potential ankle breaking fall."
I REALLY know better than to over think these things, the fall would have been safe, but her words wouldn't leave my head! I NEED to stay out of my head while on lead, it's much easier for me to be successful if I go with it, and let my body figure out the moves. When I'm in my head, I freeze, panic and cannot function above my last bolt, I hate the feeling! I sat up there and couldn't convince my self to make the move!

I knew Mike was meeting us after work so I literally waited for him to get there to finish it so I could top rope it.
On TR I WAS FINE! I climbed it without falling, I was SO disappointed in myself for being a such a chicken! He got there and just put up an few routes for us to TR, then belayed. I really felt like we were using him for his skills, so we bought him dinner at the Greek place south of San Fransisco St. I made sure to express how thankful I was to him for being our "Lead knight in shining armor."
I am hopeful I can learn to trust myself on lead, especially on a climb that is rated within the 5.10 range. We also climbed the Abyss 5.11, it was amazing! Great SPORT climbing weekend, but I believe I am due for more multipitch adventure climbing!
