Barnum Rock can also be for hikers since it's easy to get up there without ropes. I parked at the San Pedro Vista trailhead and hiked up the Incinerator ridge trail going completely around the backside of this rock. Then, I did the easy bushwhack up. There were some cairns and a faint trail in some areas. It was possible to see Rose Canyon lake from the top!

Our first trip to Barnum since it opened up (Barnum and Gumby are closed Feb 1 - Aug 31 because of Peregrine Falcon nesting). The wall is kind of broken into the left routes and right routes, depending on which way you turn coming off the trail. There are actually 16 to 18 routes in the 5.6 to 5.10 range, with lots of 7's and 8's. We started with Memorial Daze, Ranger Danger and Ann Bay Lee, then finished with Twin Peaks, Foul Fowl and Beetle Bay Lee (although we all had a little difficulty with the bulge on Beetle Bay Lee). These are all bolted with chains at the top, and we also did one undescribed route to the left of Memorial Daze using a directional off Daze chains. Good shade on many routes.

The name used in Squeezing the Lemmon III and Mountain Project for Foul Play is Foul Fowl, a 5.7.

Be prepared for some steep climbing up to the rock from the MP 17.9 pullout. Excellent sunny day on the rock with my buds.

Sorry, no track (I intended to get one on the way out with Route Scout, but forgot) or pix.

return to barnum rock
this wall has several moderate sport routes but is closed feb 1 to aug 31 due to peregrine falcon nesting
short approach
only one other party there for a couple of routes
duplicated all but one climb from our trip a year ago
as usual, took me a couple routes to get the feel for leading again
the third route was memorial daze, and i remember feeling a little sketched out on it last year, and did not feel that way at all this time - pure fun
it would be interesting to go back to the first two climbs later in the day
got a little off route on beavis, and chose not to lead butthead as they share an anchor
left three leads on the table, so a return visit yet this year might be in order
gumby wall is also part of barnum rock, and last year we were unable to find it
this trip included a mission to locate gumby for a future outing and we were successful
back into tucson, treated john to a slurpee :) (going all out for 79 cents)
dinner at casa molina, and a nice sunset much of the ride home
fun day - thanks, john!

mt. lemmon is such a great place to climb, with plenty of areas for our ability
today we were going to try gumby wall, but couldn't find the correct gully, so we opted for barnum rock right next door
this was a good choice, as there were several nice 5.7 routes featuring good rock, plenty of hand and footholds, with each route different enough to entertain
we both led twin peaks, fowl play, memorial daze, ranger danger, and ann bay lee
i led beavis and toproped butthead as they share an anchor and i needed to practice cleaning on rappel
nice to have so many options in one small area and get back into some solid leading
nothing too stout at that grade, just pure fun
had el charro for dinner :)
thanks john, it's been a fun summer hitting mt. lemmon so often

During the summer, Kelly had found two sport crags listed on mid mountain of Mt lemmon. They both feature mderate sport routes which is perfect for our current leading ability. The only problem is that the area is closed for falcon nesting from late spring to 1 September. So we went elsewhere until the time and weather was right.

Our first choice was Gumby but after a lot of bushwhacking and hiking we could not locate it. So we walked a short distance to the hikers trail for Barnum as our plan B. What a great alternate it was. Lots of long routes at our leading level + and many different moves. There were roofs, aretes, slab, books, dihedrals and some heady vertical. We are also getting spoiled by the very high quality and clean rock on Mt Lemmon.

Only two other groups stopped by and we could climb as fast and often as we wanted.

Lookig forward to returning with trad gear to try some of what looks like mixed routes.

Great end of summer climb with Kelly and now we can work the closer stuff (but give up El Charro for a while
