 Wind of Change Toprope 5.7
According to MP, a 5.8
Two Birds With One Stone Toprope 5.8G
According to MP, a 5.7
Day two of our climbing weekend.

Just James and me this time around. He began to lead Perrito, which is billed on MP.com as a 5.7+ (okay, not sure what that is, but apparently this is something that is rampant on Lemmon). MP also states this is a great first lead. Okay! So we felt okay about it... well I felt a little terrified and refused to lead up, so James got up to it and put up the first bolt, then stood up on the ledge behind him and eventually put up the second bolt.. then thought about it and somehow put up a third. This is a really stinky bad climb, in our opinions. He didn't feel good about climbing up the slab, especially with the big ledge behind him and all the runout. He asked again if I'd like to try leading, but I refused and he put in a bail 'biner and came back down. A guy around the corner agreed that it was definitely not a 5.7, even if slab is your thing.

James then put up Two Birds, which I have to agree is a 5.7 as stated on MP. Heady slabby lead, but felt really nice on TR. Then put in a directional and we both TR'ed Wind of Change, which is definitely tougher than Two Birds. If you keep the same anchors as with Two Birds, then the route is a 5.8. If you try to follow the route to the newer anchors on the left (not the originals for this route), then it is harder than that. This climb also felt good on TR.

Called it a day and drove back to Phoenix for a very restful evening grilling with some other HAZers on the back patio. :)

My first post using HAZ Tracks route manager and my new iphone. So far so good. Ridgeline has several great sport routes at my ability level and for my climbing friends Bob, Mike and Frank. Bob actually put up some of these routes and he has sketches that we plan to organize (for other crags also) and post as jpegs in the photos. The route over to the far right is a good one for beginners (like me) to practice leads. Getting to Ridgeline loaded down with 25+ lbs of gear is actually pretty good aerobic exercise. Plenty of parking at the hwy and pretty quiet during the week. We rarely see anyone else on this crag.

after a pleasant campout and a good breakfast of bacon and eggs, we packed up and headed for ridgeline, just up the catalina highway
ridgeback features easy climbing with some exposure
we each led this one, belaying from the top and rapping down a chimney
moved back to the main wall, where i led two birds with one stone
more challenging than i remembered, and i didn't get it cleanly, twice steadying myself with the draw to clip
toproped wind of change next door
wanted to lead never to be the same, but as i was cleaning the previous route, heard thunder and saw a good-size rainstorm dumping just to the east
didn't look good, so we bailed
any climbing area high enough to be cool is a crapshoot this time of year
still a very enjoyable weekend and we got some good climbs in
thanks for driving john, and for taking a day off for the overnight
picacho DQ hit the spot halfway home

quick trip to Tucson to meetup with meetup on the ridgeline. Goal was to lead the Ridgeback which I did twice along with Stormy and Steve and almost their dog.

Perfect climbing weather and none of the locals were on the wall so we had it all to ourselves. Wish I had more time as almost every climb was available on toprope but after climbing and hiking for 5 straight days I wanted to save something for Sunday.

Lunch at El Charro

not sure this is the right route - phoenix rock shows the one we did as a 5.8 unknown in the same location
Never To Be The Same Sport climbing 5.81 Pitch100 ft
phoenix rock gives this a 5.6, mountain project a 5.7
john suggested we head for mt. lemmon this time
he had researched the ridgeline area which has a number of moderate routes to lead
the book says to avoid this one on weekends, and it was a little crowded
we had to grab a line when we could, so ended up on a 5.8 runout route for our first climb
did this one a second time on toprope just to get more climbing in
next up was a nice climb listed anywhere from 5.6 to 5.8, but i would go toward the lower end
toproped that one again after leading
waited quite awhile for ridgeback, which is a long, exposed but relatively easy lead around the corner
this climb featured a top belay for the follower, then a rap down a chimney to avoid getting your rope stuck - pure fun
in between these, i had two bailouts on lead, which i wasn't thrilled with
one was on a legitimately difficult climb, but the second was because i took a traversing line and got myself stuck
would like to go back here for at least two more climbs we didn't have time for
routes were longer and the rock was nice solid granite
you could never climb everything mt. lemmon has to offer in one lifetime
it was a gorgeous day up there at 8000 feet with pretty nice views while waiting to climb
had dinner at el charro, and i'm in agreement with all of you who love this place
got called in to work early sunday morning, so i spent much of the drive napping
sorry about that, john
enjoyed the climbing, the location, dinner, and john's company
we even got a few rumbles of thunder mid-afternoon

Very plesant day high in the Catalina Mtns shaded by trees and clouds. This crag really is on the ridgeline of the Catalinas with some very nice views from the tops of the climbs. The climbing guide recommends avoiding weekends due to the crowds and limited routes. Good advice as our low climb count indicates and I never even got on lead.

Climbing is great with very nice sharp rock that stays put. I could get accoustemed to planting a fat foot on a tiny crystal ahd having it hold. After Blueridge where whole hunks come off it was a treat.

The last climb was a real treat even though we had to wait almost an hour to get on it. It is a small spire that is an easy 100 foot climb and then a top belay for the second followed by fun rappel off the other side. Sort of a multi-pitch adventure but single pitch. Looking forward to leading this one and then toproping the rappel which has a couple of nice chimneys.

Great to drve off enjoying the mountain view and of course finishing the day at el charro. :D
