hit the overlook with mike and fletch
one of the few places open within reasonable driving distance
hadn't been there in five years :o had no idea it was that long ago

duck soup - 5.7 on mountain project
mike led, fletch and i followed on most routes
always takes me a climb or two to get the feel for rock
basalt is a little different, too

burnt buns - 5.8
some skillz i need work on: stemming and crack
didn't get this one clean

morning's mourning - 5.8
same story, didn't quite get this one clean either

answered prayers - 5.9
more face climbing with better hands
got this one clean
my favorite of the day and first time i've been on it

orange out direct - 5.9 on mountain project
mike led, i followed and cleaned, fletch didn't do this one
did well down low and on the first smaller roof
climbed the big roof better last time
so not clean, but felt good about most of it and would love to do it again

we set up a rap line, rapping down after each climb
four routes mike belayed from above while the follower cleaned
trailed a line for the third on two routes
we all did answered prayers on toprope
a 60 meter rope was more than enough

beautiful day up north
had a great time as always with mike and fletch
the drive back was good, too

hit the overlook again today
set up the anchor for and climbed our first route
were in the process of setting an anchor for duck soup when the storms building all around us converged into some lightning, thunder and rain showers
bailed to have lunch in flagstaff, feeling like we made the right decision but still sad that we only got one climb in for the drive up
after lunch things cleared up, so we went back and got two more climbs in
made the day worthwhile
worked on anchor building again, and have some ideas on how to be more efficient in trying to toprope what is really a trad area
wanted to do some new routes, but under time pressure climbed what we were familiar with
another good day
thanks for sharing your birthday week with me, john
stopped for pie at rock springs
i'd never been there
can recommend the blackberry crumb ;)

After a day off, we did our third day of climbing at the overlook near Flagstaff. This was a day trip and we arrived about 10 am for the first climb. Unfortunately, a thunderstorm arrived about 1130 and we bailed to Flagstaff for lunch. Amazingly, the skys clearedup and we were back climbing by 2pm. Talk about a climber friendly place with very short and flat approach and Flag for lunch.

The overlook offered a third type of climbing in three days. The predominate feature is cracks and the rock is hard to friction but once again we found the change easy to adapt to. I took my rack and placed some gear with an eye towards a first trad lead but the weather drama put that on hold.

I also had a new experience of fighting hornets on Duck soup while hanging on to a vertical wall. I tried to treat them like bees and just climb through but when I actually got stung I got agressive and sstarted to use a free hand to swat them. They are slow and thus you can belt them a long ways while you climb away from their protection area. Ended up with two stings which itched for three days.

Great climbig with long hard routes and requiring a lot of different technique. Hope to make it back soon.

john and i didn't decide where we were going until cordes junction
opted for the overlook
my first time there, and john's third
turned out to be an excellent choice :)
very short approach, beautiful setting, perfect weather
my only concern was connecting the climbs below to the anchor points above without spending too much time on it
got to work on our anchor building skills, slinging a tree and a boulder or two boulders
picked three of the easiest routes, as the climbing here is a little different than our usual
nice basalt rock, featuring lots of cracks, lie back, jams, overhangs, stemming and some face
easy on the hands
did all three routes twice each, just to get more climbing out of the anchor-building
i loved the place, and there is plenty more to entertain us for several more trips
only two other parties at the crag
good choice, john
you had a good day up there : app :
hit flagstaff for bun huggers afterwards
couldn't ask for a nicer day

We set out at oh dark hundred with a plan that was to go orth and figure out where at the Cordes bathroom break. It was with some reluctance that I voted for the overlook as my memories of its famous crack climbs were not all that good,

However, those memories were back then and now the cracks are a lot more fun and useful. Really enjoyed the climbing, the weather and climbing Sherpa Kelly. It was fun to see what you can do with 3 pieces of webbing and a pair of locking bieners.

I am looking forward to the next trip to the overlook as there are a bunch more moderates to set for top rope. Wish I was up to Trad eading but some of the 6s might just get me going.

Thanks Kelly for the great day, good food and conversation....and for all the anchor work.

Another outing with AMC meetup but this time we had four phoenix rock climbing meet up folks as well. Really nice day and as the afternoon progressed the climbs all came under shade as well as the belays. Perfect climbing weather.

The group set up top rope anchors before hiking down to climb. This was a great learning experience for the sport climers as the AMC folks were very through and helpful. The anchors ware all rather stout given the great natural pro from various trees and rocks.

Climbing was good although as with most old established areas the grades were somewhat understated. All of the routes were climbed by at least two of the group and a couple of folks made all five.

I really enjoyed Duck soup because the different moves all mixed together required problem solving. The name and rating are deceiving as it took effort to complete. The other favorite would have to be the buns route which even includes a bit of tree climb if you wish. This route was a lot more about crack climbing and I had to make up some of the technique such as a knee jam (accidental but worked). I also thank the unknown climber who was unable to clean a small cam. That little yellow cam proved very useful.

The only frustration of the day was on mt first route where I could ot bring myself to trust a very nice hand jam for fear of peeling off and leaving the wrist behind. Later in the day I made the same move on a different route but there was just no faith on that first climb.I guess my head was still in the gym at that point. Sad too since I enjoyed everything up to that pont on that climb.

Thanks to Craig for organizing another great event and my meetup buds for the transportaion and entertainment enroute.

Great warmup! Not too challenging but gives you a quick reminder of how to climb on this type of rock...
••• Bush Rush Toprope 5.9TopropeG45 ft
I'm not that great on finger cracks esp when there's a wasp in there... Had to rest on the crux, but pushed to the top afterwards.
•••• Dugald's Right Toprope 5.9TopropeG60 ft
After getting humbled on Bush Rush a bit, it was nice to easily make my way up this confidence boosting 5.9. Loads of great holds and flakes to grab all the way up. =)
Had a halfday to burn up north before setting up a shuttle for a canyon the next day and camping up on the rim and what better way than getting some more Overlook climbing in. :D Warmed up on Griffo, used the same anchors to hit the tough Bush Rush, and then I did the IMO easier Dugald's Right, my buddy dangled on Dugald's Route as dusk set in, and then in the dark with headlamps on we climbed some 5.4ish off-route bushwhack back to the rim. The overlook on a pitch black yet clear night was pretty sweet as we packed the ropes & broke down anchors before hiking back to the car. 8)

Climbing past the crux off-width isn't easy. It seemed harder than 5.6 but how do you rate off widths?
•• Burnt Buns Toprope 5.8Toprope1 Pitch80 ft
I started on Burnt Buns and it seemed very hard. Without knowing the route I did some nasty 5.9+ climb up a crack (started on Burnt Buns, got off-route, following the crack tends that way) and ended up on Duck Soup with no way to get back over to Burnt Buns.
Chased off by rain

Good warmup route and quick reminder of what Basalt climbing is all about... Kinna awkward jamming my hip in the off-width. =p

Wow! Great route with some interesting exposed pumpy moves but there always seemed to be a good hold in reach. =)
It's been a few years since I climbed here and almost forgot how much I enjoy climbing these walls. :D Did some light crack climbing, hand, elbow, knee & hip jamming, stemming, lie backing, and then whenever I took a brief rest I got to enjoy some amazing views of Oak Creek Canyon. We got a late start due to sleeping in after a long day of canyoneering & long bumpy road back to civilization and then only managed to get a couple good climbs in before thunderstorms started rolling. Sunny & warm in the beginning and then cloudy & rainy, such is climbing...
