Thin!
By the time we approached and geared up to climb, the wall was getting shaded. This made for a better send sesh, since it was quite warm in the sun today. We didn't encounter or see any other climbers, just a moderate number of hikers (parking lot never more than three quarters full). We wandered up to the trail's highpoint before leaving since I'd never been past the Cactus Flower / Y-Crack turnoff. Maybe I'll actually do the whole trail someday, but probably not. :|

Katie and I took advantage of a shaded wall and the cooler temps to get some early evening climbing in. Sean was in the area hiking with his son and stopped by to say hi.

Katie impressed with a nice trad lead. Her second ever lead on, The Worm, 5.6. I led that route as well and a route further down called Palo Verde, 5.7. We also toproped a route I want to try and come back and lead, The Fascist Pig.

Its a shame that Pinnacle Peak closes at 7:30, otherwise we could have gotten another hour of climbing in.

 The Worm 5.6
I may have just posted the most pics ever for a 20 some foot climb, but it was my first trad lead (the worm, 5.6) and I am feeling good about the progress I have made recently. I did not build an anchor and just walked off it, but it was a big step towards getting to the places I want to go and doing some of the things I want to do. Sport is fun and it’s helping with the learning process, but ultimately anywhere I want to reach is not going to have a bolted route.

First lead went well, two “bomber” placements and one not so hot placement, could have got away with two or even one piece of gear, but I was starting off extra safe. Climbed it a second time as basically a sport route and fixed bad placement, climbed it a third time and used one less piece. Free soloed it a fourth time and cleaned remaining two pieces as I went. The last few moves and jams seemed a little more difficult without a rope, but it was basically just a boulder problem and I had a spot. My jamming was so on that I knew I wasn’t coming off that wall anyways, when I get a good jam, I can walk my feet up anything. In fact, I can climb all day in and around cracks, just don’t ask me to face up on anything.

I did another fun 5.8 crack route after, but was top roped in. A great day of climbing and learning overall. We are slowly moving towards putting together a solid team to tackle a big one in the Canyon. I will be the weak link for the climbing aspect, but they don’t want anything to do with planning the approach, so that will be my contribution to the project. In the meantime, I need to: review and apply what I have already learned, work on technique, get some more work on multiple pitches, learn how to do an anchor with trad gear and get some instruction on setting up natural anchors. I have the mind for it and the physical ability, I just need to catch up on the intellectual part of climbing and technique.

john and i have been fairly successful at getting outside this winter and spring every other friday instead of hitting the rock gym
i've been wanting to check out cactus flower east
easy approach on groomed and signed trails
only in scottsdale
easy walk up with anchors to set topropes
did catclaw first, and the lower face gave us both fits
next climbed palo verde and then live oak
new routes for me, and a different type of climbing than usual (crack, off width)
saw three big chuckwallas on the hike out
good times climbing with john as always
bacon cheeseburgers at greasewood flats for lunch
and a peanut butter cup blizzard on my way home :)

This was probably our last in town and close climb until the fall and it was a good choice. Gym climbing dosent offer any crack climbing and very little slab so having this crag handy is great training. It is especially nice since setting top ropes is easy and the routes short giving us great variety. And last but not least, grease wood flats is a nice place to replace calories and hydrate

Weak climbing day and I spent a lot of time problem solving on the rope. Kelly is a great sport as she patiently waited her turn to scamper up the routes. I also hauled all ny trad gear in the hopes of getting a lead but only placed a couple of practice pieces. Shame since that stuff weighs a bunch :(

I really like the last route which has an interesting sequence off a small boulder and a committing grab for a hand in the crack. Then it is a nice hand crack up to the top.

next stop needs to be something with some cracks and hopefully an easy first TRAD lead Overlook here we come!!!

Arizona Mountaineering Club held their annual birthday party with climbing at Cactus Flower and dining at Oak Flats. About 35 people showed up and climbed. Almost every route was set up with a rope and there was no shortage of opportunity to climb.

I managed 7 routes but I am not sure what they were other than 5-6 to 5-8 and a combination of face and crack on very short 30-50 foot routes.

Climbing was good but challenging and it took a climb to get used to the nice small features, esp. after Papago and Lookout. The access is great with very well maintained trail. Even the climbers trail was better than most.

I helped to coordinate AMC's 47th Birthday at Pinnacle Peak in the Cactus Flower climbing area. This section is heavy on crack so it's a great place to work on technique with the short routes. There are lots of new routes. We set up 20 routes and climbed until we were totally spent. Chased the climbing with big fat greasy burgers & birthday cake at Greasewood Flats. Fun day!
