Sometimes the forecast can be misleading, as we were expecting nice, sunny temperatures for the climb today. Instead we had chilly, overcast and blustery conditions for a somewhat exposed climb up the south crack. Really fun 3-pitch climb though.

Fun climb. It was chilly up top without a jacket and gloves.

Classic route with lots of awkward, strenuous climbing to a great summit. Coupla old guys, still getting it done.

Used a number one on way to first bolt.
 Silhouette 5.8
I led the south crack and then hopped off of the crack and faced up to lead Silhouette. The crack was easy, placed a number one just for practice, but would have felt fine without it. Unless you have gear it’s a solid free climb to first bolt on the South Crack. Silhouette was a crimpy, slab climb, not my strong suit, by I led it very cleanly. Then I got some food practice anchoring in and top belaying. After that it was two fun raps to the bottom.

I got off work at 1pm Friday, so Liz, Tyler and I decided to do something super quick. I had to pick up my car from the shop first, so wasn't able to meet them up there until 2. The park was closing at 5:30, but they apparently want you off the rocks about an hour before then, so you don't accidentally get locked in and end up with trespassing fines. So we had a short window to work with here.

We decided to just bring one rope, so packed that up along with some gear, threw on our harnesses, and booked it up the trail around 2:45. Ended up at the base of the climb in maybe 10-15 minutes, if even. Liz has led this several times, so she was a super quick lead. Slowest part was getting up the "4th class" offwidth section -- really not all that difficult, but definitely slows you down. I had comfort in the fact that if I fell here, my body would just become a giant cam.. just would have been a lot of effort getting back out! I was on a bight and Tyler brought up the end about 20 feet behind me. We got up to the anchors quickly, then set up for the second pitch. All three of us were up the second pitch in 20 minutes. Super quick! Rappelled twice on my 70m rope, then sauntered on down to the trailhead. The whole thing took less than two hours. Packed up the cars and then went to JJIII's for tacos 'n' tequila. :D

Fun climb, great views at the top. Seemed that the cruxes were much more difficult than the guidebook had them rated. I thought that the second pitch was the most difficult. Third pitch was a real fun chimney!

As we rappelled off the peak we met 4 other groups of climbers, 3 of which were attempting the peak. Chatted briefly with a few of them, nice folks.

Love this climb - gnats were a nuisance. The rappel and scramble back to the ground is fun, too.
