great day of climbing in upper devils canyon with mike and fletch
last time here was six years ago :o
haven't been outside much this year, so it took me a couple of climbs to feel comfortable on the rock
we did three routes on the throne, then moved into the pancake house
climbed too stiff to tip, a 5.7 and French toast, a 5.9
finished with lumberjack, just outside the pancake house
mike led all routes, fletch led three, i did all routes on toprope
great weather, even a bit chilly in the shade with a breeze
fun to revisit this place - johnr1 and i climbed here several times
nice to get outside again :)

led five routes including getting 5.7 hidden treasure clean for the first time :y: the other four were old favorites that we were scouting for potential future events.

weather was perfect for climbing and we had the place to ourselves. :)

los hermanos recovered from the housing tour and we had Flo serving today.

Bunch of folks at upper devils today and on the nearby Pinals as well.

Fun climbing but got our fill of face climbing. Led no breeze twice and hidden treasure once but skipped the trad climbing today.

Hunted down the trailhead for the Lost Wall for future visit when it cools down. Then off to Los Hermanos for lunch and apple pie before heading back to the garage and the race car.

first time climbing outside with fletch today
she is one of my gym partners, and i've climbed several things with her partner mike
fletch wanted to get some leading in, so we went to the pancake house for the shade and because i am familiar with the climbs
started with cool breeze, next was hidden treasure on the throne wall, then too stiff to tip and french toast inside the pancake house, finishing with no breeze on the outside
had fun and it was great to see fletch climbing well again
she is a far better climber than i am outdoors

john had a monday off, so we headed to queen creek
cool enough to climb at upper devil's, especially the pancake house
started on stuart little, on the throne wall
for some reason i simply could not execute the needed move leading
john led it, then i did it easily on top rope
i've led this one before, but often seem to need a climb or two to get into leading
moved on to cool breeze, which has some exposure on the outside of the pancake house
then led a mix of lumberjack and a newer climb just to the right of it
set a top rope to do both climbs as they were intended
last climb of the day was french toast, which is rated 5.9 on mountain project
john went first, and led it awesomely!
had fun as always
too bad we both had to get back into town, forgoing los hermanos this time :(
we'll be back :)

Rare opportunity to climb with Kelly on her day off meaning we had the entire Queen Creek area to ourselves. We did one sun exposed route on the Throne wall as a warm up and then scurried into the shade of pancake house. I was thrilled to lead French toast which MP carries as a 5.9. Hardest lead for me so far. Naturally Kelly sent it with ease. Also worked in "new" Lumberjack on top rope and enjoyed the view from the top of cool breeze. Played with the start of "old" lumberjack but it still escapes me but gives an excuse to come back to my favorite close in sport climb area.

skipped los hermanos as I had to get to the airport for business trip.

Weather was great as was the company

headed for slightly higher ground to climb as it warms up in the valley
couldn't have asked for a better day with overcast skies, pleasant temps and shade in the pancake house
upper devils has a number of climbs that john and i can lead
started with a new route, short and only a 5.3, then i tried to lead another newer route
got about halfway up and bailed to the route next door, lumberjack
was able to set a toprope so we could climb lumberjack
later went back and climbed the newer route on toprope and stayed closer to the bolt line
in between we led cool breeze and no breeze, which are on the outside of the pancake house and feature some nice exposure
john wanted to try leading french toast, so we gave it a go
i was able to do about 80% of the climb, then took an easier path to the right to top out
that will be a project for next time
finished the day with dinner at los hermanos
traded some lost sleep for a nice day on the rock - i'll take that most anytime
thanks for driving, john
always good climbing with you :)

Beautiful day for climbing. We had upper devils completely to ourselves...except for the 2 ship of F18 that buzzd us about 200 feet off the deck :o

It has been a few weeks since we led anything so getting the lead head back was an improtant goal. That was easy since there is a new 5.3 warmup route just outside the pancake house. It was also useful for aclimating to the Queen Creek rock after spending time on the MCDowell Granite.

I really enjoyed pushing my limit today including benchmarking capability today versus a year ago. Still cant get lumberjack start clean nor is french toast checked off.

The day went too quick and as usual Kelly was a wonderful partner on the belay with lots of encourgement, solid beta. and a couple of catches of my lead falls. :D

 Too Stiff To Tip 5.7Toprope
 Hash Browns 5.8Toprope
AMC outing after the highway clean up. Hash brown was new for me and a lot of fun but way too chort. :D

Only got in two routes as I had to get back to Firebird raceway for our race at 4pm. Made it but sadly the race car had blown a clutch while I was on the way :( ... the climbing godess's message should be clear :sl:

moved over to the pancake house and led cool breeze, which is easier but fun
then attempted to lead too stiff to tip, but bailed at the first bolt as i had a hard time seeing the holds with the sun in my eyes
we waited a few minutes for shade moving in, then john suggested using the clip stick for the second bolt
this time, i could see plenty of holds and with an unneeded stop at the first bolt, was able to complete the climb
did this one again on toprope just for fun - a good one
finished the day on no breeze, which has a funky belay stance and is a bit exposed
last time we were here this climb terrified me, and this time i felt very confident on it
nice day with morning sun and afternoon shade with cool temps
we didn't see anyone else all day, which surprised us
have my eye on a couple more leads for next time, and a couple i would prefer to try on toprope first
good choice, john, and as always, a great time climbing with you
got to los hermanos in time to see the cardinals blow the finish and overtime
even got back to the valley with daylight left

 Too Stiff To Tip 5.7Toprope
Finally got to climb something in pancake house. Every other visit to upper devils I always run out of time before getting inside this unique wall. Pancake house is several giant boulders that have fallen in such a way as to make a cave with a couple of holes in the roof. The signature climbs start inside and climb through the gaps onto a nice wall about 30 feet up. From there the routes go up a wall to anchors way above the roof.

Kelly was on a mission and led too stiff which for a 5.7 has an amazingly difficult start. I TRed it and found it to be a lot of fun which included some off route crack and chimney. Looking forward to returning to lead it as well as the other moderates inside.

The other trip report describes the two breeze climbs

Phoenix Rock Climbing Meetup at upper devils. We had 10 climbers and plenty of ropes/leaders to keep a lot of folks on the rock. Cool, sunny day with an occassional breeze and we had the place to ourselves until late in the day when a couple of climbers from Idaho (?) arrived.

I personally got in 6 routes including a two pitch with Ginger's son Dillon. I dont have the topo for this area and it isnt in any of my guides so I really dont know exactly what I climbed - but I made all of them with no falls.

I really liked the rock and climbs here as there was some long routes with varying surface and also a couple of routes with some exposure.

We also climbed on the throne wall. stuart little 5.6, dr giggles 5.7, jester 5.7 and squeeze play 5.7

Sorry no pictures Hikergirl - Joe was the camera man and we didnt climb together
