A nice afternoon at South Mountain for some rope climbing/rappelling practice with my instructor johnr1. He was kind enough to teach me some of the basics and let me use all his equipment. I paid him in cookies (baked that morning).

Rappelling is a gas!
Set up ropes - 1 hour
Rappel down - 10 seconds
Hmmm...
Thanks for doing all that work, John! Now, we can do the Jug this spring! :y:

Hopefully, John will post a triplog with some technical info and actual factoids. My climbing verbiage is pretty much limited to, "Wow, cool!"

Suzaz posted a visit to this small crag in south mountain part and was kind enough to include the photot and routes along with her pictures. I have been looking for a small local crag for giving people some outdoor climbing experience without a long drive and an exerience lead belayer. Teddy bear sounded perfect and Kat was kind enough to volunteer to try it out.

Teddy bear is located near the central avenue entrance to SM park and is in the Piedras Grandes picnic area which the park administration had close vehicle access to. So we started out with the dreaded (by climbers) approach hike. Since we are hikers, this added to the fun.

The crag is right next to a ramada and close to the bathrooms (talk about a climbing luxery). It is top rope only with a simple scramble to the top for setting anchors. The anchors are trad as there are not anchor bolts. There are several newly placed eyebolts of unknown purpose. There are about 16 routes ranging from 5.6 to a few 10s. We set up Teddy bear Face (5.6), tedy bear crack (5.7) and hang a left (5.7)

I probably firehosed Kat but she absorbed it all and demonstrated that comprehension. First was building a text book cordalet anchor. We slung one bolder with runners, roped another bolder with a tied webbing and then used piece of gear in a crack for the third. Kat got to try a cam and then did a nice placement of a stopper. In fact it was so good I couldent clean it and she had to. All this took a while but we were working on nice flat rock perfect for learning. We extended the anchor for top roping and explanied the difference.

We than clipped and tossed the rope and scrambled back down to do some climbing. Kat learned to belay with GRIGRI and ATC and also how to tie in. She then climbed part way up Teddy bear before running into a move that probably couldnt be done in hiking boots. I than got to climb it with her belaying and learning how to TR belay and lower. I also got to climb the 5.7 as well.

Next was Rap practice on a gentle slope which we could do without moving the rope. She got the hang of the ATC and braking right away and how to use a backup. Than off to the top again and we launched her into space from the top. No problem other than lack of pictures. So try again with photos and by the third time she was ready to rap into the Jug when it warms up.

Packed up and headed back to the car and then off to the top of SM for a short hike on the national trail down to hidden valley.

And the cookies were better than ever along with perfect weather.

This is a neat little crag that is perfect for teaching.
