We drove out the day before and set up camp. Just took it easy since my in-town birthday celebration had been the night before. I guess by "taking it easy" I mean that we didn't climb, but lots of bourbon and beer and whatever else was in the cooler was had.. oh yeah and we cooked on the campfire too. :) Hiked off the alcohol the next day and went to Tufa City. As always, I don't do any climbing out there. Partially because the routes are above my grade, but mostly because I'm still easing my wrist back into the game. Took a few pictures while up there too, of course.

We'd heard there would be a group out at Homestead for Christmas.. little did we know it was going to be such an organized event!

We got out to Bonetown and spent the afternoon there, working on various climbs. My favorite out there is called Milk Bone, but I unfortunately was under restrictions for this trip so couldn't climb it. The others had fun climbing on it, like a long boulder problem. After doing a few routes there, we went back to camp, where JB set up some Christmas lights in the garbage tree. It actually turned out looking pretty cool, with all the metal junk in the tree acting as ornaments.

Christmas day, we ventured out to Slate Nation, and then Tufa City to work on some projects. This was my first time at Tufa City, so seeing all the cool tufas was fun and different! They're basically long vertical columns, and nothing like anything I've ever climbed on. Spent the day in the sun out there, and then hiked all the way back to camp for Christmas dinner. Christmas dinner turned out to be two full turkeys, yams, spinach-strawberry-pecan salad, and several other eats and treats. Later on in the night, Brent showed up with some really delicious apple pie (vodka) cider, and some fudge -- so good!

Janelle and I had to head out at that point and meet up with Jameson for our next adventure. We were bummed we couldn't stay longer, but really glad we got to share that special experience with so many people. One of the best Christmases I've had!

I joined some hard sport climbers for a great trip filled crazy hard, tufa style climbing! My friend Patrick documented the trip and took a short interview of my goals for this trip. At first I protested but now I am glad I let him do it; I think it helps define my goals overall with this hard powerful style of climbing.

Both days Patrick pushed us hard with the approach into this area, It's a kick your butt type of approach that is such a great way to start the day!
I ALWAYS love watching and belaying really strong climbers and this area completely supports it. It is so interesting to watch their calm graceful demeanor as they seem to flow on the rock, they make it look effortless and beautiful. Long colorful stalactites decorate this area and make for a completely new style of climbing for me.
Again, I used the "party tent" and the 3 from my crew bunked together. We had a great time with a good sized group of climbers around an awesome bonfire. I admit I was out of my league but I managed to finish everything I tried and even TR'd my 1st 12a. I also took a lot of time to observe these guys gracefully move on the rock. Soon, I hope I will be leading these hard climbs with the same grace and finesse.
I am so bruised and beat up and my fingers are pink and fleshy but I feel great! what an amazing trip! It's good to REALLY kick your butt every now and again.
