Got notified a few days ago that some climbers were getting together for a memorial climb and dedication to John Scott/johnr1. We met up at Lost Wall, beneath his final route, where they had installed a plaque in his memory. The route has been renamed "Great Scott" (formerly Projectiles). We then shared some memories and experiences with John.

Afterwards, we went up top, had a small potluck-style lunch, and then went over to the Throne where there was shade. Had a nice afternoon of easy climbing with a good group of people.

Queen Creek sandbagging really gets on my nerves sometimes. I feel that leading a 5.6 should instill at least a little bit of confidence. At QC, it makes me whimper and talk to Jbeans' Ewoks.

James started off the day by leading Projectiles, which is a fun climb, but extremely heady and run-out on lead. I hadn't realized what route it was until later that evening, but knowing that JohnR1 got up there and led this route made me super proud of him. It's definitely far above the grade that many would find comfortable. I TR'ed it and was really glad not to be on the sharp end.

Next I decided to put my big girl pants on and led True North, which was good but also very run-out. Welcome to QC! I told myself that when it's run out, it's easy, and tried not to overgrip. After that was finished I did a TR of Stoned and then took a long nap.

Great day for some climbing with friends. And actually a really good place to start practicing leading again. Here's to you, John.

between the uncertainty of my work schedule and the cooler temps, john and i decided to stick to queen creek today
john found this little piece of upper devils for us to check out
easy enough access
a pleasant surprise to find two additional easier routes bolted, guessing a 5.6 and a 5.8
did all five on toprope, two of them twice
projectiles was probably my favorite, as it went up a dihedral and required a variety of moves
should be able to lead four of the five
left a harder route on the table
good reasons to go back
nice find, john
perfect weather, maybe a little on the cool side in the shade
started the day with breakfast at the brass rail and finished with a late lunch at los hermanos :)
digging into the mountain project beta, i'm finding a couple more small areas like this one
plenty to check out
hadn't climbed outside in four weeks :o

We expanded our knowledge of Queen Creek climbing with this off the beaten path crag. I was looking through Marty's book several weeks ago and located the trailhead after a day at the pancake house. It looked interesting and the guide book isted several moderates so pitched the concept to Kelly and off we went. I admit I had her at a moment of weakness due to hunger but we solved that at the brass rail. Interesting crowd you see in a bar on Sunday morning but the food was good.

The approach was a bit steep and slippery but relativly short. The anchors were mostly accessible and I even used the first one to rap in which was fun though I paid a price for not having repacked my rope after the last use. Untangling is best done watching TV not at the top of a climb.

Not sure where the route lists went for this area but Kelly posted them in her triplog. Led one and TRed the rest on the north half of the wall. We found that TR could be set on many of the routes and only one was a bit heady-thank you Kelly for setting Projectile!

Projectile was a lot of fun. It is a dihedral which required stemming, mantling, face climbing and some wiggling (technical term) to get my fat posterior up a chimney thingy at the top. Looking forward to leading this route.

Once again we had the place to ourselves and the weather was great as was my partner. We are looking forward to returning to lead more of the routes and also to play with the 5.9 crack route that shares space with projectile
