This was an interesting 6 mile round trip hike from the Emigrant Canyon Trailhead in the northern Chiricahua Mountains to the historic quarry of the Arizona Marble Company, hidden in the hills just east of Fort Bowie. Beautiful snow white marble (metamorposed Escabrosa Limestone) was quarried here from 1909 to 1911. A company owned mining camp existed at that time. Today, one can see rusted machinery, an old boiler, a few collapsed buildings, and scores of massive, abandoned blocks of quarried marble (visible on Google Earth!), scattered among the pinyon pines and junipers. And then there is the quarry itself: a sheer walled, 60 foot (?) deep pit. If one were to fall in there, it would be their grave, for sure.

This hike, which came highly recommended by locals, has only one problem: it's attraction, the old quarry site, is on private land, posted as no trespassing. It took some work, but I located the landowner, who gave me permission to hike to the quarry.
