After setting up a car shuttle, we drove up Echo Canyon and took a look at the Eye of the Needle. From there we continued to Inyo Mine where gold was discovered in 1904. We explored all the buildings and tunnels. Then we hiked cross country 8 miles into Slit Canyon and explored it's beautiful narrows and grottos all the way to Hole-in-the-Wall. For fun a few of us rappeled the longer falls. I nearly had to cut off some of my hair because I forgot to tie it back and it got caught in my rappel device!!! It was really cool to be hiking out as the sun was setting to see the Hole-in-the Wall with the low light!

Took a quick trip to Death Valley in an attempt to escape the post-Thanksgiving shopping hoards in town. There were a lot of people at Death Valley, but they were not getting away from their vehicles (many RVs), so we had the place to ourselves while hiking. We mostly poked around the Hole-in-the-Wall area, hiked up a canyon with some great dry-falls, and then visited the historic rock quarry in the Red Amphitheater where the road officially ends. Really great views down into Death Valley toward Telescope Peak. Driving the 2 miles from Hole-in-the-Wall to the end of the road was extremely adventurous in our 2WD cargo van, but would present no problem in a 4WD vehicle.

Nice 1/2 day up a canyon with some challenging dry waterfalls to climb or get around.

This was our morning outing, the first of two planned for this first full day of seven days in Death Valley National Park.

This interesting canyon, located in the southern Funeral Mountains, is the northern most of several canyons draining through Hole-in-the-Wall. This little known canyon located beyond Hole-in-the-Wall has several long and beautiful narrows. The nearly mile long lower narrows, carved in polished gray limestone are among the nicest and most extensive in the park. It has impressive falls, a shaded grotto, and the canyon's namesake- a straight corridor no more than 5 feet wide.

This day due to me neglecting to bring my 30 foot rope (to lift up/down our heavy day packs), this hike ended at 1.6 miles in, at the Slit area past the scenic and challenging Grotto Falls area just before the 50 foot "gatekeeper" falls which is within the beginning of the ~1 mile one way First Narrows section.
