I didn't do my homework before heading out, so ended up taking the more difficult and circuatous path and needing to double back on several occasions. But in the end, we did the route in reverse order from what is described here.
The crazy thing is that looking at Grasshopper and gpsjoe's photos from their trip in 2010, almost nothing had changed at the camp. Same buildings at about the same level of decay, same left-behind "junk," same shafts and tunnels. The only newer addition was an NPS warning sign about hantavirus inside one of the buildings.

Added on 6 mi by parking at Badwater Road and hiking all the way up and back. But, it was quite a lovely day and the ability to enjoy the views along the way more than made up for hiking on an unpaved road. Not to mention the complete lack of traffic.

Just short hike around the ruins. Did not see any trail of substance from the parking area for ruins but I did not look too hard either.

Hiked a loop in Ashford Canyon to Ashford mining camp and mines. The track submitted was edited to reflect the best route to take which is shorter than the mileage we did. We went past the Ashford mines and there is little reason to do that. Also we went up the canyon at the beginning and had to turn back because of a dry waterfall blocking the way. So the track has a route that will allow you to get there without these troubles.

Ashford Canyon is located in the southern Black Mountains of Death Valley National Park.

For some the highlight of this hike will be the Ashford Mining Camp, located in a scenic and remote canyon at a relatively low elevation of 2250 feet. On this full day in DVNP, I believe that Joe and I more enjoyed the scenic views and colorful geology of this canyon loop hike to and from. The camp and surrounding mines provide an interesting glimpse of life in a remote gold mine camp occupied by the Ashford brothers from 1907-1915.

Various interests worked over 4000 feet of tunnels off and on until the early 1950's when the property was finally idle for good. Harold Ashford estimated that the total production of gold ore from 1907-1950's had sold for $135,000 about half as much as was invested.

For the first time ever in the wild, I actually found some "real gold" embedded-in quartz rock while hiking in this lower canyon segment http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=126268 A very special moment for me :y: On our hike out, my second best moment was finding an old historic genuine "Prince Albert" tobacco container.. http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=126292 :D
