You can motor on a paved loop road right up to the 2,407' summit where there is an old observation tower built by the CCC. While the elevation may seem unimpressive, the mountain stands high above adjacent areas and provides great vistas in all directions. Roughing it here is akin to lazing around the house. In addition to a ranger station, you will find close by a museum, lodge and restaurant. And, if you really want to hike, more trails abound in the NF below.
Cheaha has only a few very short trails, Bald Rock being one of them. Leaving the summit on the one-way loop, the TH rests just down the road. Touristy and very busy. The parking lot was bordering on full. A raised wooden walkway, handicap accessible, goes down to a nice vista point, Bald Rock itself, with interpretative signs along the way. The walkway straddles two ground trails through a scrubby forest that is growing back after logging, fire or disease. We found a patch or two of wild azaleas but not much else to please the eye. This is a trail you may want to do once, just to say you were there. |
