Another one 9L hadn't done and I insisted should be put on any checklist while visiting Coro. There's a bit more signage than last time, which is nice. The 400-ft climb makes it a little more than just a tourist stop.

Is it the most spectacular cave? No. It is not. Is it worth visiting if you're here? Absolutely. It surprises me how few hazzers have made this a stop amongst all those that have posted other trips within a couple of miles of this one. :-k

It's an hour well spent.

Next hike of the day was to visit Coronado Cave. I did no research for this hike. But I knew where it was located and I know it’s on my wife’s to do list so I thought I would check it out.

TH parking for this hike is just west of the visitor center, (maybe .25 miles). There’s enough parking for about 8 cars. Not a lot, but I honestly don’t think this cave sees a lot of action. The hike up is rather intense. There looks to have been some minor re-rioting along the way. It looks like the park service is trying to control the “use trails” that have been created by eager spelunkers :) . There is a bench at close to the .3 mile mark for those who want to appreciate the views (and catch their breath). I had just done Joe’s Canton Trail and this trail is much more vertical than anything on that trail. When you start to hit the stairs you know you are getting close. The cave is more tucked away than I would have thought. You don’t see it until you are almost on top of it. The cave is bigger than I thought it would be and unfortunately there is no lighting like in Carlsbad  I didn’t bring any lighting so I didn’t descend too far into the cave. The rock hop down (into the cave) is a little tricky and I’m sure will be daunting for the wife, but I hope to come back in the near future with a headlamp to find out how daunting. I had the trail and the cave to myself. Disappointed that I didn’t come better prepared.

Our plan for day 2 was to hike in Ramsey Canyon but the park was closed on Tuesday. The only option if we wanted to hike in the Canyon was to take a trail further downstream. The weather is a bit warm for that so we changed our plan. We headed down to Coronado Cave and Montezuma Pass. Coronado cave is a short 1.2 miles round trip with an interesting natural cave at the end of the trail. Ginny and I explored the cave. We didn’t have a flash light so we used her cell phone light.

We didn't do a lot of reading on this beforehand, so we were really excited about the extensiveness of the cave. Of course its a pretty hike anyways, given the area.

It wasn't easy, but I was able to get around the cavern with a bulky kid carrier attached, without waking the occupant. Our 4 year old needed some help to get around, but still managed well.

Immediately following our Ramsey Canyon hike, most of the group drove over to the Coronado National Memorial which abuts the border with Mexico. The uphill trail to the cave seemed longer than the advertised half mile in the warm afternoon sun. We explored down into the cave with flashlights. You can go back in the cave about 600 feet where it is nice and cool.

Decided to check out this cave. I didn't know anything about it. In some ways I was pleasantly surprised. But it was a little drab compared to others I've visited. Probably why it's open to the public. I think by definition this is a "dead" cave. No water and no real signs of geologic processes continuing. Still a worthwhile visit if you're ever here. It's a short, easy hike that just about anybody can do.

I've resisted Coronado Cave long enough. I really don't know why I've been putting it off. It may be its relative popularity, the reports of vandalism, the shortness of the trail. Well, enough is enough...

Coronado Cave (also known to locals as Montezuma's Treasure Vault and Geronimo Cave - names that predate the establishment of Coronado National Memorial) is a limestone cave that stretches 600ft into the base of Montezuma Peak. This craggy pinnacle looms over the trail and is in view for the majority of the hike up to the cave entrance. The geology of Coronado NMem is complex, chaotic, and curious. Sedimentary, Metamorphic, Igneous - it's all here. Long ago, a substantial limestone layer was lifted from the depths of the earth by a major volcanic event. The result is a superheated, tangled, beautiful mess of rock jutting out of the southern Huachuca range. This layer is where Coronado Cave was formed and is still forming.

The trailhead for the cave trail is located .25 mile past the visitor center (west). There is a small parking area near the TH, if it is full there is parking available at the visitor center. The trail climbs approx 500ft in .5 mile and although short, gets the blood pumping. The descent down to the cave floor from the mouth of the cave is probably the most difficult section. It is not a true scramble but the slope is steep and rocks are slick from use. Without a flashlight it's difficult to go very deep into the cave. The park (and numerous caving groups) suggests two sources of light per person, and never explore a cave solo. "Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photos, kill nothing but time".

The old description states that one must obtain a free permit at the visitor center before hiking and entering the cave. Regulations have changed and about 6 years ago the park stopped requiring a permit. There are obvious pros and cons concerning this arrangement. It allows hassle-free access to the cave, a freedom to explore that is not often allowed in limestone caves. However, a permit free system comes with a dark side, one that people must find strangely seductive. I'm referring to the unexplained need for people to vandalize an underworld marvel. Graffiti is sadly a common sight throughout the cave, especially in the hidden alcoves and side tunnels. I will never understand the desire to leave one's name on everything. Perhaps it is akin to a dog pissing all over it's perceived territory. Well, to those who might dabble in this type of activity I say - please, stop pissing on our collective heritage.

Before the NPS assumed management of the cave the cavern was well known and routinely looted of it's natural and cultural history. Stalactites and stalagmites were broken off and taken home as souvenirs. Ancient stone projectile points were hunted and removed as well. I can't help but feeling robbed. It's as if essential passages have been torn from the story of Coronado Cave.

Alright, I realize this report has taken on a somber tone. The truth is that the cave, with all it's bruises and scrapes, is beautiful. Larger cave formations have withstood the beatings and are still awe-inspiring. NPS staff, resource management teams, geo-corps and SCA interns have been working hard to clean and restore the cave and their efforts do not go unnoticed. At the back of the cave I sat in complete and utter darkness, listening to the occasional water droplet fall from the ceiling onto the cave floor; an encouraging sound signifying the cave is still alive, still forming.

This was a fun little hike. Not difficult really at all (besides the entrance to the cave was slippery.) My children (7 & 5) had no difficulty at all. We enjoyed it and the cave was wonderful!

Near to the Coronado National Memorial - A nice little hike that is close to town and near to several better known trailheads. Trailhead parking lot along the roadway. Extremely well maintained! It might be short, but the vertical rise in the second half is littered with 30 - 40% grade durations. The overall avg. grade for this hike is 119.7%. GPS Route Available.

Went on this hike with my family to explore a nice cave at Coronado National Memorial as the other hikes at the memorial were longer and would delay our trip back home. The gain was very sharp for such a short hike and my wife had some difficulty. There were plenty of switchbacks and the last portion of the hike was loaded with steps including some between boulders. The cave was expansive, but did not go in far as my back was acting up. The weather was outstanding and we took backs memories of this unsung national memorial near Sierra Vista, AZ. :)

Took my parents on this hike beautiful hike. It was the first trip here for all three of us. The first impression was wonderful in the visitor center, with those ladies being quite nice and the restrooms being clean (always a big plus!) We obtained our free pass to use the cave trail. The trail was very clear, no guessing as to where the path was. It is steepish and rocky once you go a little way. My parents, age 76 and 65, made it fine with rest breaks to look out over the beautiful scenery. They used their hiking sticks, which I recommend if you that helps you. Once at the cave, the most nervous part is just getting in and going the first few yards, as the rock wants to slide. After just a little way there is no sliding rock, just dirt. The cave is dry inside, not damp. We saw one man with his light on his hat which would have been quite helpful, so your hands would be free to help lower yourself or hang on to the rocks to get in. Nothing dangerous! Once in go straight forward. That is where we ventured to and saw fabulous formations. Other folks were telling us there were several other rooms and even other openings but that we have yet to explore on a next adventure. My parents enjoyed this so much they plan to bring my sister on her visit to Arizona.

It's hard to believe that Arizona weather can be so nice in December. Hiking up to the cave on the well maintained trail can be a little tiring from all the steps, but it is pretty easy if you pace yourself.

My kids loved exploring the cave. It is really dark once you get away from the entrance. The trail is about 600' in length and has some really neat crawl spaces.

Bring good flashlights and new batteries!

Trail has had a lot of work done to it since I've been here last. They did an awesome job which has made the trail easier. Trail is fairly steep but not to long. Lots of wildlife about. I didn't go into the cave this time as I have been in there before. Lots of damage and vandalism inside, but still neat to explore.

Cool cave-steep trail, but no biggie...saw some bats and got dirty!
Disappointed in the "vandalism" of the cave...lots of formations broken off it seemed.
The cave was smaller than expected, but worth the trip.

This was my first hike in Arizona, it was pretty steep, but easy with breaks. Loved the cave and um.. scared the bats.
