Even though the weather wasn't perfect we headed out for a day on the trail. Since we knew we probably wouldn't get views today, we opted for a forest hike from Longmire over to Carter and Madcap Falls and then onto Narada Falls. Clocked in just over 9 miles. We hit some rain outside the park on our drive in but except for some misting when we crossed the river on the way to the falls, we had a dry day on the trails. For a Mt. Rainier hike, trail didn't feel too crowded even though we saw a good number of folks out hiking today. Spotted a woodpecker and some squirrels but that was it for wildlife today. Still, a day on the trail beats sitting at home or in the office!

Walked to Cater Falls from the wide turnout near Cougar Rock Campground so just a short 2.2 miles trek. Also walked down to the Narada Falls viewpoint from the parking lot. A few patches of snow there but nothing too bad. Finished up with the Trail of the Shadows at Longmire. The mountain didn't really show itself today but the weather was still pretty nice and the park was less crowded than I had expected -- I guess it's still early in the tourist season.

Another great day on the mountain. We hiked from Longmire past Carter and Madcap Falls to Narada Falls. Trail is in good shape until Carter Falls. A couple of small snow patches before Madcap Falls. Then it's solid snow all the way to Narada Falls. There are a few creek crossings that are somewhat difficult even though there are bridges because of the amount of snow. We the first and last bridge but chose to bypass the middle bridge by finding a spot downstream to cross. If you're going to go past Madcap Falls you should be familiar with the trail or have good navigation skills. Not sure if we would have done it had we not been familiar with the trail. We had microspikes and used them but it's probably doable in just boots -- as long as they are water proof. Earlier in the day the snow was harder which made it easier to walk on. After lunch it became softer so it made it a little more difficult to walk on. Beautiful weather. Too bad some people can't follow the rules and bring their dogs on the trail and fly their drones overhead. On the way home around 2:30 PM there was an almost 4 mile backup to get into the park -- the longest backup we've ever seen!

Overcast when we left Seattle but by the time we reached Longmire things had cleared up. Not too hot, just right for a hike. Great views of Mt. Rainier and all the falls were flowing well. The rainbow at Narada Falls was visible as well. Not real wildlife sighting save for a few squirrels and chipmunks but still a great day out on the trail. Not too crowded either which was a pleasant surprise considering the nice weather.

Out and back from Longmire to Narada Falls. Some snow on the trail after Madcap Falls but then the last portion to Narada Falls was snow free. All the falls were roaring and the mountain even made an appearance in the morning before afternoon clouds partially blocked the view. Narada Falls even had a little rainbow at the bottom just like in the viewpoint sign picture!
