MJ and I took a small bite off this contour trail in late afternoon with a long drive back to Montgomery ahead of us. A young man decked out in hiking gear sat near the entrance to this Wilderness Area. "I want to warn you of a big black racer (snake) on the trail. It wouldn't move, so I turned back." There are six venomous snakes known to Alabama (three kinds of rattlesnakes, Copperheads, Cottonmouth and Coral), but the racer is not one of them. So we moved on down the well-defined trail that was streaked with veins of running water. No sign of the racer. We had no destination in mind and turned back after doing little over a mile.
The Cave Creek connects with many trails including the 339-mile Pinhoti which travels well into Georgia and meets up with the SE section of the Appalachian Tr. Some spring blooms were starting but for the most part the trail follows a course with little eye appeal. No large streams, no vistas. See the first half mile, you see it all apparently. But it was busy. On our return we ran into 10 hikers coming our way but not the guy who warned of the black racer. He was still sitting by the parking lot when we got back. |
