| no partners | | Went to Newport to see my son get his officer's commission and graduate from the Navy's Officer Candidate School over the weekend. It was cheaper to fly in Wednesday to Saturday, so that gave me one free day to sightsee. Did the Cliff Walk in full fog conditions and 97% humidity, I could see the coast line barely and very fuzzy outlines of all the mansions along the hike. Pretty easy stroll and I finished up the actual 3.5 mile Cliff Walk in a little over an hour.
Then discovered that everyone in Newport sleeps in, including taxis, Ubers and the town trolley car. At 7 AM I couldn't get anyone to pick me up and it was an hour wait for the cab company to swing by to drive me back to the starting point of this point to point hike. Pulled out my map, did some quick calculations and figured that it was a two mile walk through the mansion district and the downtown area back to where my car was parked. Looped back to the car rather than wait for transportation. |

| no partners | | It was raining Christmas Eve. But New England is always a weather mystery. I awoke sometime overnight at the sound of sleet pelting the window. I went back to sleep. By morning the sleet had turned to snow and Christmas morning was the way the storybooks always portray it.
I have a family that can't sit inside all day, so we headed to Newport to spend a couple of hours enjoying the remnant snow squalls and blustery winds the storm left behind. This is a pretty cool place. I really enjoy visiting touristy spots in off-season. I can't even imagine the traffic mess this would be in the summer.
I might even opine that the scenery is actually nicer in winter.
We made it back home in time for Christmas dinner. |
