We hiked from the Glacier View TH to Gobbler's Knob. This route has no road-walking and is shorter than the route from the Westside Road. Under 8 miles total length. You have to drive 8.5 miles of forest service road to get to the trailhead but it's definitely worth it. There's even a great viewpoint along the road in at about 7 miles from the main road. Wildflowers were out and we didn't see a single person until we got to the top. While there were a few people there, we did have some time to ourselves. Saw more people on the way out but the trail didn't feel crowded by any stretch. Beautiful blue skies meant the views were great. Bugs were out but not too when the breeze came around. Nice and cool when we started out just after 9 but it had heated up by the time we got back after 2. Meadows looked to be the perfect spot to see some wildlife but a single frog was all we saw.

Hiked to Gobbler's Knob from the Glacier View trailhead. We had hiked to the lookout via the Westside Road in Mt. Rainier National Park a couple of years ago but 8 miles of road hiking makes for about a 12.5 mile long day hike. This route shaves a number of miles off and doesn't include any road walking. Wildflowers are out! Bugs were worse earlier in the day than in the afternoon (especially near Belijica Meadows) which surprised us. Great views from the lookout. Even saw a weasel near the lookout. The road to the TH is rough but you do get a great shot of Mt. Rainier about 7 miles in. Goat Lake was prettier than I had expected as well. Saw a decent number of people out on the trail today but definitely less crowded than trails originating from inside the park. Had the top to ourselves for awhile before sharing it with one other group of 3. Another great day out on the trail. Finding FR59 was the biggest challenge. If you pass the Copper Creek Inn and Restaurant, you've gone too far. Fortunately the nice ranger at the park entrance gave us good directions and after pulling a u-turn out of the park we found it and were glad we did.

Headed back out to the West Side Road this morning and did the trip up to Gobblers Knob. Only saw a couple of goats on the cliffs today. Did see a deer cross the road as we turned onto the West Side Road early this morning. Trail is in pretty good shape once you walk the almost 4 miles of road to get to it. Past Lake George there are several patches of snow to cross but none proved that difficult. Poles might be handy on the way down. Views at the top did not disappoint. Can't believe this hike was this do-able so early in May. Go now and beat the crowds!

Picture perfect day! Beautiful blue skies and not a cloud to be seen. It doesn't get much better than this. A slight breeze kept the bugs at bay. Hiked to Gobblers Knob from the West Side Road. Got to see where the boulders came down recently but the new road end is not that much farther than the one I used last year. Great views at the lookout and while there were a few people out on the trail, less than I imagined. A long hike but today's view were well worth the time spent.
