Great day on the trail today. Saw our first coyote? while hiking. Totally cool. Views were great if not a little smokey/hazy. Also saw the regulars -- grouse, squirrels and chipmunks. Plenty of bear scat but no bears. 4 cars at the trailhead when we got there and we saw maybe 12 people total. Hiking on a weekday has its perks.

One of our favorite hikes that we try to do at least once a year. Thawrted by fire last year and snow earlier this year but today made it without issues. Meadows are dry and flowers are gone but the plus side was bugs weren't really an issue. Some clouds over Rainier, more so in the afternoon but still had good views. Lots of grouse noises but they were shy. Lots of bear poop but no bears. Berries are out, especially on the first part to Lake Eleanor.

Not quite as sunny as we had hoped but the mountain still made an appearance. We started around 9AM and found Rainier to be totally socked in by clouds when we arrived at the meadows. We had come this far so we continued on. At the trail junction at the end of the meadow we took a right for about another half mile to a favorite lunch spot. Clouds were still out but so were the autumn colors. As we ate lunch a group of 4 grouse just came sauntering down the trail. In years past we've seen the occasional grouse but this year it seems like we've seen them on almost every hike. On the way back we stopped periodically to turn around and found the clouds had somewhat given way to some glimpses of the mountain. As we've done this hike on a bluebird day the views didn't quite live up to expectations but were good nonetheless. And the fall foliage is really starting to shine. All in all, a great day out on the trail.

Gorgeous day for a hike. We've done this hike in the past but both times were in the fall so it was nice to see the meadows when they were green. Flowers are blooming but peak time has not arrived yet. Bugs were not too bad, really just noticed them at the first big meadow after the lake where you get some peek-a-boo views of Mt. Rainier. Stopped to take some pictures of flowers and the bugs found us in an instant. In the main meadows we saw a lot of bugs and they were buzzing around us but they breeze helped keep them at bay. Some small snow fields to cross and on the last climb up to the meadows there is a fairly long section to cross but we able to manage just fine with boots and poles. Views at the meadows were awesome! The only thing missing was some wildlife. At the end of the meadows we took a right turn and hiked the half mile to a great viewpoint where we enjoyed our lunch. Didn't many people until our return portion which was surprising given the great weather. Some blowdowns before the lake but all were easy to get around. Trail is muddy in sections and there is running water in other places but overall trail was in good condition. FS 73 is in good condition as well.

Got an early start at the trailhead at 8AM. Passed two guys at the lake and then didn't see anybody until I headed back. Lots of bear scat in the meadows but alas no bears. Saw what looked to be elk or deer tracks as well. Scared some grouse up just before breaking into the meadows. I had done this hike once before but we turned left on the North Loop trail instead of right. Today I turned right and did the extra half mile to a great view point. Definitely worth the effort. Great views along this trail even if flower season is over. Bugs were buzzing around and I had put on bug spray at the car so I didn't get any bites. Maybe my scraggly beard scared them off. Was a very hot hike. Finished all 3 liters of my water along the hike. Road is in good condition. It's dusty but doable in any vehicle I think. Met lots of friendly people on the way back.

This hike had been on our list for awhile and we finally made the trek today. While it's probably best to visit in summer during wildflower season, fall provided solitude (for awhile) and still great views. Saw lots of evidence of bears and elk but alas, they did not show themselves to us today. Still, we were treated to some gorgeous views and nice peace and quiet until after lunch when the crowds started to show up. We'll definitely be back.

Some great foliage along FR73 along the way to the trailhead.
