Belated post. Spent several hours visiting Haystack Rock. This is one of, if not the focal point of Cannon Beach. The beach front is lined by homes, shops and restaurants, but the beach itself is spacious with surprisingly firm sand. (Most of the beaches that we visited seemed to have a firmer surface than the beaches of San Diego). There were a few rock outcroppings in or near the surf, the most prominent being Haystack Rock. We arrived at low tide so we were able to walk out to the rock. The puffin population was in full force, covering most of the rock and swooping through the skies. They numbered well into the hundreds. There was no trail that I was aware of. We just walked along the beach. 1.5 was the given mileage for this “hike”. I went with that, but I don’t think it was 1.5 miles to get from the boardwalk to Haystack Rock and back. However, we did walk some of the shops so we probably got a little more than that. Very nice town and beach though the breeze coming off the ocean made it chilly.

We actually started our Tillamook Head hike with this out-n-back, and my stats are included on that one, but I figured this really is a separate destination for most people so I'd give it a separate triplog.

Crazy busy being a holiday and prime low-tide situation. Still a fun spot to visit. Very scenic.
Climbing the stack or getting up on the rocks is prohibited to protect the sea life that calls the place home. Well, until a couple weeks after we were here, when a mountain lion scaled the rock and caused the whole of Cannon Beach to get shut down. Almost as if nature isn't exactly why the place is popular to begin with!

It's a slow morning, so I'll post one final triplog from my Oregon getaway last September. I really don't know where Haystack Rock Trail is located, as Haystack Rock is located in the water. Its base is accessible during low tide by walking along the beach. You can explore the tidepools but you can't climb on the rock as it's a protected bird-nesting site. I easily trekked a good two miles going back and forth from my hotel room. If you've never been to the Oregon Coast this is an absolute must, especially post-Labor Day when the crowds have died down.
