Disappointing. Sold to me as the highest falls (over 2 tiers) in NY at 260 feet. Google showed me it looked amazing in the fall color. I was up in NY for a week exploring abandoned pych wards, hospitals, hotels and houses and one of my routes had us passing by the falls trail. I figured why not breathe some fresh air for a change, plus the fall color up in upstate was really a sight to see. One day's route put us on the path to the TH and we probably had just enough sunlight left to hike the 1.5mi up to the falls.... Annnnddddd the road was closed .9mi from the trailhead. That would have been .9mi too much for the sun left and Steve's hurting foot so we gave up and hit another photo location.
Saturday was supposed to be our day off from 6 14hr exploring days but we lasted until noon and got bored. So we went out again and I figured after a couple locations that I'd hit the falls again, and with some extra sun, hike the road closure down. to the TH. When we got to the barricades, a worker was coming up and told us he'd be opening it all up in 15min. That seemed good and Steve opted to join in that case. Once opened, we were the first car on the road and also at the trailhead. The trail at first is the shoulder to shoulder length narrow highway edge for the first quarter mile. At the dirt path up and away, a ranger was stopped and fiddling with the sign-in info box. It's never a good sign when the ranger gives you the ol' discourageye and says something to the effect of, "You're hiking this? And you're the first person here? Ok but it's barely a trickle."
Well the woods beat the car and the desert normalcy so, we went anyway. Most of the hike is a steady uphill along the creek. I collected some leaves along the way. Once we got near the top, we heard people. Apparently there is a way in from the top side. Picture Workman Creek Falls stacked on top of Workman Creek Falls. That was the flow. I didn't even bother knocking down the scores of rock stacks that someone loved so much and getting the camera out and to take a photo. When we gave it a second look and left, all kinds of people were hiking in. The parking lot was even full when we pulled out.
