Bluebird day on the mountain. Had a 30 minute wait getting into the park around 9AM. Line was 2 miles long when we left in the afternoon! We hiked from Narada Falls up to Paradise then took the Golden Gate trail up to Skyline. Then over to the Lakes trail and down to Reflection Lakes. From there we took the Wonderland trail back to Narada Falls. A nice little loop. We prefer to do this loop clockwise as it gets the majority of the climbing done first. As expected, Paradise was a zoo overflowing with people. Skyline trail was jammed pack. We found periods of solitude on the Lakes trail which was nice. A few snow patches on the Skyline trail and while slippery, they didn't provide too troublesome. Other trails were in pretty good condition if not a little dusty. No bears today but we saw several marmots, deer, and grouse along our journey today. Flowers may not be at peak but were plentiful. Note that the regular restrooms are closed at Narada Falls but port-a-potties are available.

After being thwarted to hike from Narada Falls to Reflection Lakes I Hiked up to Mazama Ridge from Paradise along the Paradise Valley Road and then up 4th Crossing. While Paradise was packed, I passed three skiers shortly after my start and saw three hikers on their way back soon after. Then I did not see a single soul the rest of the day! Could not believe it. Once on the ridge there was a snowshoe track for awhile but I eventually blazed my own path to our favorite lunch spot about a 0.6 miles south once you get to the ridge. While there had been some fresh snow, the snow under it was pretty solid so I didn't sink down hardly at all so even though I was "breaking trail" it was easy. very different from a few weeks ago when breaking trail was a tough slog. Enjoyed a long lunch with great views before heading back to Paradise the way I came. Still a zoo at Paradise when I returned. Tourist season is upon us as there was even a large tour bus in the parking lot. Le sigh.

Arrived at Paradise with mostly clear skies and thought it would be a bluebird day. Headed down the Paradise Valley Road. I was going to take it all the way until it intersects with the route up from Narada Falls but nobody had gone that way and I didn't want to break trail the entire way. So up the 4th crossing trail where some folks were already breaking trail. When I reached the top, clouds had rolled in and blocked the mountain. From here I broke trail along the ridge to our favorite lunch spot. Today it was one without a view. As I ate though two gentlemen passed me going down and one couple came up from Narada Falls. Being early and with a trail already blazed I continued all the way down. Took the short trail back over to the Paradise Valley road but again no tracks heading to Paradise. One skier had apparently came down. Not wanting to break trail (I'm out of shape), I decided just to return the way I came back up Mazama Ridge. The great part was that once I broke out to where there were views, there were views as the clouds had moved on! So I was able the end the day on a high note after experiencing great views. A few people out on the trail today and all were so friendly. Couldn't ask for a better day!

Mostly beautiful day up at Rainier today. Cloud free to start the day but by lunch the clouds had started to move in from the West and we made it back to the parking lot at Paradise around 2PM the mountain was completely covered. But we were lucky to have great views during our entire snowshoe today. Road was dry all the way up to Paradise. Recent snow gave everything a nice fresh coat of beautiful white snow. Another great day on the mountain!

Arrived at Paradise around 10AM to bluebird conditions! Road to Paradise was almost completely dry -- the only spot with a little frost was at the bridge and parking area near Kautz Creek. We did a loop from Paradise walking down the Paradise Valley Road to Inspiration Point and on to Reflection Lakes. From the lakes we took the Lakes trail to the junction with the Mazama Ridge trail and took it up toward Paradise. We didn't see anybody along Mazama Ridge until we were almost at the junction with the 4th crossing trail. That even included a nice 30 minute lunch break with a killer view. Couldn't believe we had the place to ourselves! Took the 4th crossing trail down to the Paradise Valley road and followed it back to Paradise. Just over 7 miles.

Bluebird conditions on the mountain today. Puyallup was socked in with fog this morning and this evening when we got home but up on the mountain it was a gorgeous, warm, sunny day. We did a loop from Paradise down to Reflection Lakes and up Mazama Ridge. We walked down the Paradise Valley Road to signed (and marked) trail to Reflection Lakes. Lots of people enjoying the views at the lakes. Then it was back up that same trail where we turned right and headed up the unmarked Mazama Ridge trail. Down the 4th crossing trail to Paradise Valley Road and back up to Paradise. Just under 7 miles but that includes our walk from/to the lower parking area. This loop gets most of the road walking out of the way first and gives great views for majority the snowshoe. My wife switched over to micro spikes on the way back due to a painful blister and did just fine. I did the whole loop in snowshoes but it could probably be done in boots or spikes if you wanted as the trail was pretty well traveled the entire way. Surprised to see fewer people today than last Sunday but that's not a complaint -- we were just pleasantly surprised!

Heavy fog in the lowlands as we made our way to Rainier but we were surprised (and happy) to find pretty clear skies in the park. Road to Paradise was mainly dry and clear of any ice/snow so the drive up was a breeze. Restrooms at the visitor center are open and there is one ranger manning the desk just inside the visitor center (the rest of the visitor center is not open). We did a snowshoe from Paradise by starting out on the closed, unplowed road just below the inn. At the 4th crossing we took a left and headed up to Mazama Ridge. From there we followed the trails of others to the junction with the High Lakes trail. Unlike the summer trail, the snowshoe route for Mazama Ridge hugs the treeline closest to Rainier. The junction with the High Lakes trail is signed. From there you can head down to Reflection Lakes or take the trail a short distance to where it intersects with the Valley Road. Both ways are marked with orange poles (Mazama Ridge is not). We took a right and headed to the road where we took another right to follow the road back up to our starting point and complete a loop of about 5 miles. Lots of people out today but it never felt crowded. Views were great!
