Stops one and two on a half day trip to Globe. The Gila Pueblo doesn't offer much, being situated in the middle of a college campus and all. Besh-Ba-Gowah I've been to before, but it's been a few years. I remember being able to climb the ladder to the second story of the reconstructed ruins. Not anymore. It was all barred up and the ladder removed. Maybe I was dreaming that... Stop three was the Gila County Historical Museum. It's free and has nice collections that touch on Salado culture, mining history, ranching and more. Stop four was Old Dominion Historic Mine Park which gets its own triplog and an incomplete hike description.

Disappointment central. Besh-Ba-Gowah seemed so much cooler to me in 1998, I guess. Today it seemed like a dump heap. The walls were reconstructed shoddily, the "ethnobotanical garden" was in poor repair, and there were votive candles and melted candle wax on many of the pueblo walls. Very strange. My wife and I were not very pleased with how the city of Globe has kept up the ruins (admission now $5/person).

Luminaria Night 2007. Decided to go up to Globe and check out this event. What made this one special was the full moon rising in close conjunction with Mars (around a 2 degree separation)! It was interesting and worth the drive. :)

With Benny Coe. Absolutely perfect hiking weather with temperatures hovering around 80 degrees mid afternoon. Have had these 2 sets of ruins on my "to do" list for some time. My morbid sense of curiosity was piqued earlier in the year by Ranger Eddie during a hike to the Tonto Upper ruins when he mentioned the "not so peaceful" archeological record unearthed at Gila Pueblo. The most startling fact is the way the 2 sites have been "rescued" from modern development. Wouldn't classify this as a "wilderness experience", but it certainly scored high on the kid-friendly list!

Interesting to see the community college smack dab on top of the ruins.

Something is lost in the reconstruction at Besh Ba Gowah - too perfect and secure looking. Fake appearance with all the cement. I'd rather see a pile of rubble.
