| partners | | This was the last hike of our second day in Big Bend National Park. The Mule Ear Spring trail is a 3 mile one way trail of which we did 2.5 miles. The prominent feature is the rock outcrop called the mule Ear. I thought it looked like Batman’s hat. This reminded me of the Horns of dilemma in the Goldfield Mountains. This trail though does not go to the Mule Ear directly but just passes by to the north before heading down to the Smokey Canyon Trail. The trail does pass by Mule Ear Spring which does have a light flow with pooling water. There must be water there most of the year by the look of the vegetation.
There is some elevation gain to this hike, making it the most challenging of the day. Not a hard hike and the trail is in good condition. We were able to do a 2.5 mile per hour rate most of the way. This would be the last hike of the day and tomorrow we won’t be able to get any hiking done because of an incoming storm. We will be spending the day driving through the park checking out the Southeast section. I included a few photos of that drive and all the snow. This is the second large snow storm this winter season the first being 18 inches late last year. I will have to make it back here at the end of April, should be an excellent spring. |
