Sunny and hot day called for a hike with ample shade so we hiked from Longmire up to Narada Falls and then over to Reflection Lakes. Falls were beautiful. A slight breeze at reflection lakes so no reflection but the wind helped keep the bugs at bay while we ate a leisurely lunch so that was a plus. Trails were in good condition if not a little dusty in places. Lots of people out on the trails today but there were periods of solitude as well. Saw a deer right on the trail where the Narada Falls trail branches to Reflection Lakes. Another great day on the mountain.

We did an out and back from Longmire to Narada Falls. Bridge (and handrail) are in over the Nisqually river. Carter Falls and Madcap falls were roaring. Narada Falls was spectacular as usual and the sun even stayed out long enough to give us that famous rainbow. Mist coming off the falls felt good. A few patches of snow to cross after Madcap falls near Paradise River Camp but nothing you can't do in regular hiking boots. One big blow down about a half mile before Narada Falls but it wasn't too difficult to get over. Sun stayed out for most of our hike but the clouds seemed to be coming in when we got back to Longmire around 2PM. Backup getting into the park at that hour was 2 miles! If you're going to go, go early.

Another beautiful day on the mountain. Some high thin clouds early in the morning but those burned off by around noon and we pretty much had a bluebird day. We snowshoed from Narada Falls to Reflection Lakes. On the way in we took the road and on the way back we took the route through the woods to avoid the avalanche area along the road. Back at Narada Falls we walked down to the falls viewpoint. Very rare to have that spot all to yourselves. Afternoon sun on the falls was great! A fair number of people out on the trails today but it never felt crowded. Windy and cool at the falls in the morning but it warmed up nicely during our snowshoe.

Beautiful day at Rainier. We braved the crowds as today was a free entrance day so there wasn't much solitude out on the trails today. But the views and animals made up for it. Saw a couple deer just inside the park on our way to Narada Falls where we started our hike. From there we hiked to Paradise and then took the Golden Gate trail to its upper junction with the Skyline trail. Golden Gate trail started with a nice grouse perched on a branch very close to the trail -- almost thought it was branch itself! Next up was a nice black bear foraging along the slopes. A little far but with the camera zoom got in some good pix. And of course the views were great. Took a right when we met up with the Skyline trail and followed it to the intersection with the Mazama Ridge trail. Along the way a marmot was content to be a star for all the hikers as it just sat there eating grass. From that junction we headed down to Reflection Lakes where there was no reflection today but still gorgeous views. Back over to Narada Falls to cap the loop. Berries and flowers are done but fall colors are out.

We did a loop starting from Narada Falls and going up to Paradise and then over to the Lakes trail down to Reflection Lakes and from there back to Narada Falls. The mountain was out in the morning but clouds starting blocking the views after lunch. We saw several marmots along the Skyline trail, one grouse and on the trail between Reflection Lakes and Narada Falls, a deer with two fawns. Wildflowers may be past their peak but they are still out in abundance. Salmon berries were out (and delicious) as well.

We headed up to Narada Falls from Longmire. Crossing the Nisqually River in the morning we got some pretty good views of the mountain but there were some clouds. Surprisingly there was not a lot of traffic on the roads or trails today. We passed Carter Falls and Madcap falls before reaching Narada Falls. When the sun was out there was a small rainbow at the bottom of the falls. As we headed back to Longmire, we noted on that reflection lake was only 1.5 miles away and since it was still a little early for lunch we decided to push on and make that our lunch spot. A little more climbing and we were there. Clouds were starting to hide Rainier and while the wind helped with the bugs, it did not help with the reflection. But it was still a good spot to eat lunch and soak in the views. Fortunately the return trip was almost entirely downhill. Another great day out on the trails!

Walked to Cater Falls from the wide turnout near Cougar Rock Campground so just a short 2.2 miles trek. Also walked down to the Narada Falls viewpoint from the parking lot. A few patches of snow there but nothing too bad. Finished up with the Trail of the Shadows at Longmire. The mountain didn't really show itself today but the weather was still pretty nice and the park was less crowded than I had expected -- I guess it's still early in the tourist season.

Another great day on the mountain. We hiked from Longmire past Carter and Madcap Falls to Narada Falls. Trail is in good shape until Carter Falls. A couple of small snow patches before Madcap Falls. Then it's solid snow all the way to Narada Falls. There are a few creek crossings that are somewhat difficult even though there are bridges because of the amount of snow. We the first and last bridge but chose to bypass the middle bridge by finding a spot downstream to cross. If you're going to go past Madcap Falls you should be familiar with the trail or have good navigation skills. Not sure if we would have done it had we not been familiar with the trail. We had microspikes and used them but it's probably doable in just boots -- as long as they are water proof. Earlier in the day the snow was harder which made it easier to walk on. After lunch it became softer so it made it a little more difficult to walk on. Beautiful weather. Too bad some people can't follow the rules and bring their dogs on the trail and fly their drones overhead. On the way home around 2:30 PM there was an almost 4 mile backup to get into the park -- the longest backup we've ever seen!

Went from parking lot to the viewpoint across the bridge on the side of the falls.
