| no partners | | Partially Cloudy. 60-70 Degrees during hike. Total Time 8:36:45. Started at 10:45am. Finished with about 2 hours of light to spare.
Started from Yeon Parking lot and was at the top of Nesmith point in 1:56. While steep, the climb was much shorter than I remember and I was surprised how quickly I found myself at the top. I passed 4 hikers that were headed up and only saw 1 person headed down. Once I turned onto the 4x4 road after Nesmith Point, I didn't see anyone else for the remainder of the hike.
Everything between Nesmith Point and the 4x4 powerline road along Tanner Creek was very overgrown. The trail was never very tough to follow, but it could definitely be slow going as I had to push my way through thorn covered berry bushes and avoid spearing my legs on jagged branches that littered the trail.
I took a detour along Wauneka Point Trail, which was easily the most overgrown section of trail. The area obviously doesn't get much use and the forest is beginning to reclaim the land. The trail also has a very eerie feel to it- mostly due to how remote and isolated it feels. But the vision quest pits and fresh mountain lion scat I encountered definitely added to the feeling. I don't know if it was the eerie feeling, or the fact that I felt most tired while pushing my way through all the downed trees along this section, but I really have no motivation to ever revisit this section of trail.
Back on the main trail as it got close to the drop into Tanner Creek, the trail crosses several dirt roads that could possibly cause some navigational issues. Some of the trail signs at these 4x4 roads are broken or worn down, leading to some educated guesswork in order to decipher their meaning. The drop into Tanner Creek seems to take forever- you know its steep when you are getting tired going downhill!
Once on the 4x4 road along Tanner Creek I was able to start jogging and kept going for the remainder of the hike. I stuck to the historic hwy along I84 instead of following the Gorge Trail #400.
No real cramping issues to speak of on this hike. My quads started to cramp when I stood up after my first water refill at McCord Creek, but otherwise I had no other issues. |
