Started from FR4614. Only a couple of patches of snow left on the road. Trail was mostly snow free until about a hundred yards before the Tumala Mtn Junction. Several very slick and steep patches of snow on the last bit of the climb to the viewpoint- very happy to have brought micro spikes with me.

After visiting Tumala Mtn, I continued east along the ridge above Tumala Lakes. I noticed an overgrown trail that descended the south side of the ridge and was unmarked on the maps- so I followed it down to the valley floor and checked out the first meadow.

Back up on the ridge, I continued east to the main trailhead on FR4610 before retracing my steps.

First hike of the new year. Temps in the 40s, mostly cloudy. Started from the trailhead off of FR4614. When I visited just a couple of days ago there was snow for the last 4-5 miles to the trailhead, today it was just the last 100 yards or so that had some small patches. What a difference a couple of days makes.

Followed the trail out to Old Baldy and back. Old Baldy is completely tree covered, so there are no views from the top, although there are a couple occasional views of Hood, St Helens, and Adams from along the ridge. It was nice to take a quiet stroll through the forest, but this is another one of those trails that will likely fade into obscurity as the years go on as there is no real draw to it. It already has quite a bit of deadfall on it and is ill-defined in through several stretches.

Officially changed my gear over to my winter pack today so I headed out for a quick evening hike to make sure everything felt right.

70 Degrees and sunny as I left the city on my way past beautiful farmhouses and maple trees bursting with color along the Clackamas River. By the time I reached the trailhead it was quite a bit cooler in the 50s and breezy, but not terribly cold. The trailhead feels very remote, tucked along a fairly overgrown forest road, despite only being an hour away.

Had the trail all to myself. Not the most interesting hike, but it does have a nice view of Mt. Hood, St. Helens, and Mt Jefferson from the summit. I had planned to watch the sunset from the top, but it was super windy and I could only last about 15-20 minutes before I turned around and headed back.
