Another hike in Highland Forest State Park. The Shortcut trail starts on the main Phil Suters Trail but branches off to shorten what would be a 9 mile loop if we kept going. Decent trail like all the trails in the park and great quick workout loop option when time is limited.

Karl doesn't allow sleeping in on vacations, so we got in some hiking.

Visiting family near Syracuse, NY we had a chance to hike in Highland Forest Park. Nice system of trails and this morning we decided to try the Phil Suters Memorial Trail the longest in the park. Typical central New York scenery with rolling hills and flowing creeks. Spring had not yet arrived so trees were barren with some showing first buds. The trail winds around from ridge top to creek crossing never dropping more than a few hundred feet before ascending again to the next ridge. It was also a bit cold by AZ standards with 30 degree start temp but was still a great hike!

I spent a lot of weekends in Highland Forest growing up, picnics, hiking and cross country skiing. Thanks to HAZ, I learned that the Onondaga Trail, aka the North Country trail, goes through Highland and is 39.9 miles long...maybe someday.
