Our trip started on Saturday morning, after meeting our group in downtown Seattle. Drove to the TH at Schrieber’s Meadow on the south side of Mt. Baker. We spent most of the day on the moderately strenuous approach as we started hiking from 3,400 ft. in sub-alpine meadows. The hiking continued through old-growth forest for the first two hours. We exited the forest at 4,800 ft. and continued up the trail through high alpine meadows along with seasonal snow covered regions. We arrived at Sandy Camp (6,100 ft.), perched high on the south side of Mount Baker, in the afternoon. We enjoyed some spectacular views from camp of the Easton glacier while eating lunch/dinner.
Sunday = Summit day. We started our climb around 7am, as this late in season, crevasses were open wide on the glacier and it was easier to navigate through them during day light. The route begins with a climb to the top of the Easton moraine at 7,000 ft., where we accessed the Easton Glacier. From there, we ascended the gently angled Easton Glacier until we reached the crater rim at 9,800 ft. We then climbed up the Roman Wall and crested the summit plateau at just over 10,500 ft. A short walk leads up to the summit of Mount Baker, at 10,781 feet. After resting on the summit, we made our way down the same way we came up, down to Sandy Camp and enjoyed nice mac&cheese dinner.
Monday (Labor Day), we hiked out to the cars and drove back home.

I've read that the Park Butte offers great views of Mt. Baker but after today's hike I'm still not convinced. The forecast looked good and we got an early (8:30AM) start from the trailhead but aside from a peek-a-boo view early on, the mountain stayed shrouded in clouds today. There was a work party at the lookout tower (fresh paint). It was still a good day in the outdoors but we'll have to come back again. The one positive was that bugs were virtually non-existent. After last weekend's swarm at Indian Henry's Hunting Ground at Mt. Rainier that was a welcome relief. Lots of people out on the trail today. I-5 traffic back to Seattle was nasty -- too bad there is a not an alternative route. Still, a bad day on the trail is still way better than a good day in the office!
