I wanted to stay closer to home, but not be in the heat of the day so I hiked from Mesquite Wash to the Cline cabin TH.

Along the way I went to Mine Mountain, but never did find the mine. I saw a rattle snake and not one but TWO :y: :y: Gila monsters! That was the first time a saw two Gila monsters in one day. As I returned to FR143 I saw a black cat like animal the size of a bobcat run across the road and dove into the bushes.

The Picadilla creek a nice flow to it. It was the only running water I saw all day.

Lately it seems like each hike is a repeat of the same hike done 18 months earlier... and this one will be another.

This first trip up here we started on a cool drizzling day that turned to snow before we reached the summit. Although the weather closed in enough we did not reach the summit we did take the time to build a snowman. (I returned 3 days later for a solo summit) But enough of days gone by...

This trip was a cool day as well but at least there was no forecast precipitation within a hundred miles. Although we could have driven a few miles up Forest Road 1521 to cut the trip length down, since we didn't really care if we reached the summit we figured we'd just enjoy the day and let it go at that.

We followed the ancient mining road to its terminus well up the mountain, then just enough farther to an area of wide flat boulders for our picnic lunch and a short cat-nap.

The only thing that spoiled the day was the huge number of shooters I'd ever seen/heard on the east side of 87. Not only was it the number of shooters, more than one were firing fully automatic rifles (one guy seemed to go through a full clip each time) and by the distinctive sound from two separate locations, I'd have to believe more than one shooter was firing a Barrett or other .50 caliber rifle.
:gun:
This was nothing like the somewhat tame sounds from the Usery range, which I'm sure had a lot to do with the fact we were well up a wide canyon that acted like a megaphone. The .50 cal shots actually sounded like they made a full circle around us and back out.

But true to form, by early afternoon when the ATV crowd came in the shooters were on their way out... We figured it was a good time to head home before things got too wild on the road. We were almost too late as one ATV came within inches of becoming a bug on my front bumper as he came sliding around a corner. Being in the bigger vehicle I let him worry about not being squashed.

Sorry, no video. I know, I know, I should have had my GoPro on the front bumper... ](*,)

We attempted Mine Mtn from the NE side via an old jeep road. We made it to the steeper slopes but got turned back by thick and vicious growth! I think the approach from the mining area is probably better.
