Great way to start the new year, few others around. Santa Clara River was high couldn’t cross.

Hiked around Titan II site, Silverbell Cemetery, Sasco smelter. And the Sasco hotel ruins.

Hiked around the Titan II site out there. Too hot so didn’t stay to explore more.

This area usually features some nice poppy action late winter, so thought I would check it out. Yes, the flowers were doing their thing, but since there was a lot of gunfire in the immediate vicinity, I didn't linger and wander around like I normally do. I worked my way up to I-10 at Picacho on various roads, then headed east on the freeway to Picacho Peak State Park for my next stop to see wildflowers. It did not disappoint. :D

Time to check on the poppy display out by Sasco. They did not disappoint. :D Having some weather moving in added to the enjoyment of the day, giving things a muted aspect. Took the back way home from Marana and was treated to some nice rainbow action by Picture Rocks. A very fun time!

Scenic drive to see how the desert is looking out toward Ironwood National Monument, with a photo stop at Sasco. The poppies are doing their thing at Sasco as expected due to our good seasonal precipitation.

A bit of walking around the Sasco area, this time to the west of the smelter and townsite. The ore bins and huge slag heaps are in this section on the northwest portion of the property. Hey, Red Rock has a Dollar General store now (that's pretty important for isolated places like that). Moving on up!

A friend and I went to check out Peppersauce cave. Neither one of us had been there before, so we took our time and explored as much as we could.
On they way home, we stopped off at Sasco Ghost town to walk around.

Total distance was 30 miles from Sasco, to Silver Bell Cemetery, back to Sasco. Round trip took 4:04.

I haven't been to Sasco since the late 90s. I figure its time to go again. I spent over 2h30m in Sasco. I climbed two of the near by hills, and went to every structure i could see. Then drove to Silverbell Cemetery.

Nice easy loop drive through part of the Ironwood Forest National Monument and over to the once large mining operation at Sasco. Wanted to see how things were looking these days, as I don't get out that way very often.

Sasco portion only, parking at the Santa Cruz River. It looked passable in my putt putt car, but I didn't want to risk getting stuck in the mud. I visited the cemetery first, then hiked up White Cross Butte overlooking the townsite. Then I visited the ruins. One structure is like a below-ground maze. I see why paintballers like it here so much. The hotel ruins are the most scenic/impressive. I met some friendly cows back at my car. So friendly they didn't want me to leave and blocked the road on my way out.

Beautiful land out this way. Unfortunately the beauty is quickly interrupted by the illegal activity in the area. Can't say that I would recommend this hike to the faint of heart for that particular reason.
