Gorgeous day for a hike. One of the lesser crowded trails in Mt. Rainier National Park. Started just after 9AM which was probably a little late given the heat today. Trail is in pretty good condition, just a few areas that are overgrown and one minor washout area. It was a hot and dusty trail, especially on the way back. But the views are worth it. Great views of the mountain as well as Mt. Adams. Bugs were not too bad although when the wind died down at the lookout, you did notice them. After seeing all the recent reports of bug issues, we chose to be proactive and put on bug spray from the get-go so while somewhat annoying, we came away bite-free which is a win. When it's this hot, your best bet is an early start.

Most times you get the best views early in the morning but today I think a later start might have been better as there was a pretty good layer of clouds out when I started my hike around 7:30. On the plus side this made the hike up a little easier to deal with given the heavy sun exposure the last half of the trail receives. Even though there weren't blue skies awaiting at the top, the views were still great. You could see Mt. Adams as well as Mt. St Helens. Saw less than 15 people out on the trail, so this trail keeps its reputation as one of the least traveled in the park. Hard to believe considering the great views it provides. Heard from one party that some other hikers saw a black bear cub and so they decided to turn around. No such luck for me. I had hoped to see some elk in the upper meadows but today was a wash-out for wildlife. Still, a day in the park is better than any day in the office!

Perfect day for the views on this hike. You have to work for them but they on worth it! Got an early start just after 8AM which is a must for this trail. The reward: Perfect weather at the top, no clouds and no people. Enjoyed the peak by myself for about 30 minutes before returning. Only saw about 10 people out today which is surprising given the quality of the views on this hike. The lookout tower is locked but you can climb up and still get great views from the deck. Could see all 4 peaks: Rainier, St. Helens, Adams and Hood. Wow!
